The 21+ thing is just a drinking thing, not an entrance thing, nationally.
The issue with NYC in particular is there was a HUGE crack down by the cops a couple of years ago on under age drinking. Most of it was bullshit, but insurance in the city to allow 18+ events is really expensive and most places don't want to risk it. For example, in Philly, if you have an 18+ event you need to have the 18+ people completely separate from the booze, where only the 21+ can go. It blows, but, well, some people make due.
The way I look at it with this area is you can do almost anything and make due. It's just hard to get your foot in the door. If you have some cash to survive for two months for rent and food you should be okay as long as you can get a job. And don't discount different neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, where it's less expensive to live and the pay is almost the same as Manhattan for lower tier jobs.
Like I said, if you're gonna do it, you should do it in NYC. It just takes a small bit of planning is all![]()
