I live in San Jose, and caught him Christmas weekend at 1015 last year. I was actually at a Pvd show, where PVD played for 4 hours, and then all of a sudden darude's comes on and drops sandstorm and plays till 6am. That was probably one of the funniest shows I've been To.

The point that everyone has been trying to tell you is that beat matching is part of being a dj. Music selection get people more excited than a ill transition.

In Los Angeles the parties such as Basic, Sub level, Liquified, Avalon always have solid no name DJs backing up the headliner or playing in the side rooms.

If you are at a smaller club trying to get people in the door and you base your DJs on their guestlist then you are in for trouble. It's easy to embarass yourself and show your lack of experience (level control, poor EQing, poor record selection, bad transitions, key clashes..etc) with or without using sync.

In for trouble is a weird phrase, because it depends on what you want.

If it's just the bottom line, then all that matters is people being there and buying drinks. I honestly think that happens most when the DJ brings a crap ton of people in and then keeps them just happy enough to not leave.

As much as I know I shouldn't, I drink less when the DJ is good....I'm too busy having fun.

The most I drink at parties/shows/nights/concerts/etc. is when the performers are bad enough that I don't care what they do and leaving isn't my choice.

A really great DJ knows how to work the floor and cycle people between the dance floor, the bar, etc.. But since they seem to be so few and far between, playing just well enough that anyone who does care about music stays in the club seems to be good enough.

That's is probably why a few of the best nights I've been to have been in shit holes....they might have cared more about the music than the money and just let it show in terrible upkeep of the building.

I think there's also a big difference in mainstream and underground here.....and knowing where we all fall on that spectrum would probably end this debate.

Personally, I'd rather give $100 to the guy who built the sound system and also works the door than spend $100 on shit, trendy "cocktails" made by a "bartender" who doesn't know what a Ricky is while listening to some asshole (sync or no sync) spam the Beatport top10 into the red all night.

Funny sync talk...in my experience sync is not very reliable. There's been tracks where I worked the beat grid and such, and sync doesn't properly do the beat-matching. So, instead of just depending on something that might not work properly and then having to fix it, I just do it manually. Really, beat-matching is not that difficult, it takes practice, a sense of rhythm and a good ear (besides proper equipment). It makes it more enjoyable to mix, and there's a true sense of accomplishment. The same thing can be said of manual gain vs auto-gain, I prefer to do it manually.

    This is too much!

If a governor sync was a good idea...you would NOT be the only one thinking it was a good idea.

Maybe they give starting out DJ's a chance in Tokyo...but in the rest of the world it is not so!
You actually need to mix...to get a gig. They will not pay you and let you 'learn' on the job...it is JUST not like that.

My best mate lived in Tokyo for about 7 years. He is a DJ\Producer with a few albums out. I trust his judgement.
He recons that in Tokyo, they play various types of music throughout the evening in clubs and each act is different.

The Japanese like it like that. They are not too fussed about the type of music....as long as its good and they enjoy it.

They are not like the rest of the world that if you go to a ELECTRO club...thats all you wanna hear and will be pissed if someone plays Minimal.

So Jaf....its DIFFERENT there mate. You are 1 guy digging in your heals here....against 11 pages of people telling you something else.

This is NOT a sync debate at all.

It is a debate that Laptop Users should use Sync, to prevent bad mixes.

Now in my opinion, that is NOT the way to go.

    Bye.

Like I said earlier, I've lived in many cities over the world, same story everywhere. And we don't actually have too many all genre events here. We might have floors with different genres but not too many all mixes, they aren't that popular. But the, "my friend says...." thing always sounds convincing. Thought you spoke from personal experience guy. Your friend says, lol. Get out of your bedroom and see the world.

    Whatever mate.....

You right, you go ahead and make all the DJ's use sync if they have a laptop.

If it works for you great!

    Good luck.

First sync will get better over time.
Second I never said beat matching is hard, in fact it's extremely easy, which is why I find it odd so many people brag about it. It being so easy people still manage to mess it up though. Maybe it's a pretty girl in the front row, maybe a little too much booze, or a brain fart, what ever the reason. The only reason we can compliment a dj for being tight is because others aren't.
