-- CHECK our DEBUT (DEEP)HOUSE EP RELEASE ON BEATPORT "RSTRCTD - EXISTENCE" --
Hey All,
Its not a mixer mod, but I thought this group would appreciate. SEE ATTACHMENTS. This is a little thing I put together for Burningman 2009. It runs on 10 rechargeable D batteries and will bump all night. There is a SUB on the back to give it that lil extra kick. You can see an early speaker test on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaIbWKKxxAc
Next Steps:
Version two will be louder and use solid state drivers for the highs. It might be nice to incorporate a lil stand so that I can have a full mobile mixing station.

Well the box is pretty much done. I'm having some issues with the POS usb hub I'm running my devices through (it's creating this monster lag time) so the faceplate's still unbuttoned until i can square that away. Also looking for some fader caps and need to pick up a few more knobs.
The knobs and faders are all connected to the PCB of a Nanokontrol, and the buttons are all QWERTY keys. The two on the left are Shift and Option, so I've effectively got 4 times the number of buttons with key combos. LRLRUDUDABAB gets you infinite extra lives. I couldn't figure out a very good way to do this with MIDI, and they had USB keyboards at fat alberts for seven bucks apiece...I picked up three.
There's just one connector on the back, this big diesel Neutrik USB jack. I stuck a hub inside the box to connect the keyboard's PCB and the Nanokontrol, and that's what's giving me grief now. It works fine when I plug the devices straight into the laptop or into a different hub, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem. Anyone have any ideas? (Besides NOT buying the $10 LaCie cute-as-pie matchbox hub?)

I don't know how to solve your latency problem, sorry, but I think you should be commended on this fine piece of work.
Really well done.

thanks for the props! i'm going to do a writeup on it with some photos, probably sometime next week because i've got a show on Friday that I'm totally unprepared for and i should spend this week getting my shit together.
@herb--I broke the USB port off a nano as well; i realized that there's another set of traces just below where the port connects to the board and you can solder the wires straight to those. it's a lot easier. and actually, building the thing didn't take that long. this was my first real soldering project and it was a lot more head-scratching than actual work. i had to destroy one nanokontrol to find out how it all worked, which I had budgeted for...you can buy two of those for the price of almost any of these DIY midibox PCB kits. It took about a week of coming home right after work at six, drinking tons of tall cans and working til three in the morning to bang it out. I was kind of wrecked by Saturday, but it got done. And that includes scrounging all the wood for the box, building the box, cutting the faceplate, all the soldering, drilling, running out for screws n glue etc.
Anyhow, yeah. I'll have some photos and a step-by-step up in a week or so. Hope it doesn't fall apart at my show!
