sorry for the double post but:
normally i can do fn and F8 to go into the presentation mode

then i did the dual screen thing and i cant go to presentation mode. even though i unchecked the 'extend to this screen' box

now when i do fn and f8 it says presentation mode is off, i need it on

HELP! (presentation mode is where both screens show the same thing)

This picture is from Windows 7 but it should be similar on windows xp. You just rightclick, select properties and then the settings tab instead of just rightclicking and selecting screen resolution.

I also only have one screen plugged in but I think that in combination with me describing stuff should be enough.

If if do Rightclick > Properties > Settings (the tab on the far right) you'll see something similar to this picture above but there should be two boxes (screens) in it. Just click and hold the mousebutton down and drag one of the screens to the other side of the other screen and all your issues should be fixed.

no, thats not the problem. there was a mode i used to be able to get to where i could make the 2nd screen show the EXACT same thing as the 1st

now when i try to get to that, it makes it so the 2nd screen is more screen space instead

i need to be able to get back to that first mode. (its called presentation mode, if that helps)

Okay, I've looked into it more properly and tried myself using VMWare. XP does not support display duplication natively, you need to enable that though your graphics card drivers instead.

If you have an nvidia card (like me) just rightclick on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel and then it should be somewhere under the category 'Display' to the left (don't have a second monitor that isn't too much of a hassle to plug into right now to try myself).

I would guess you can reach Catalyst Control Center (ATi's equivalent of the nvidia control panel) the same way and I know that Intel GMA settings are reached that way too (it's like that on my fathers netbook).

    i have ATI
when i right click the only special option is properties, but i can go to the display settings and then click advanced and see 'ati radeon x1270 properties'
then i can get to the catalyst control center
i seem to be able to do alot from there, but i dont have the time te really explore it at the moment

thanks for all the help so far

don't think you have to switch master/slave, just swap the monitors on the display menu.

Under the advanced properties there should be an option to "mirror displays" or something similar. You may have to dig around a little bit. Although IMO it would be nicer to have the display extended since then you can have different applications open on different monitors. You might also have to choose options under the advanced settings for your graphics card to choose which display is your main monitor.

Edit: Now that I think about it, if you don't have a the box checked to extend display, you should be able to check the box to make it your main display. Or you might have to choose different combinations until you finally are able to check the box to make it your main display. I know there is a way to do it on XP, I used to do it all the time, but I mostly use a mac now and can't remember exactly what all the steps are.

In the bottom of the box, you will see two checkboxes Use this device as my main monitor and the other scored Extend the desktop onto this monitor. Also, only one display connected, but I think in combination with my description of the commands should be sufficient.
