Just tell them you feel like you need some more $$ to do it. Maybe say you'll do the charity events for your hourly rate, but stuff that's not charity you need the bump. If they say no you can still do the charity ones for the practice and if the other nights bomb they'll ask you to come back...hopefully.

To be completely honest with you, I would not mind. I got asked to do prom last year. The kids wanted me to do prom last year, but I didn't think I my skills were that great and I wanted them to have a good time with a Dj who's been doing this professionally.... Fail. Dj played nothing but EDM all night. These kids asked for Hip-Hop, spanish music, etc. and the Dj didn't play any of it. Admin. didn't take it as a big deal, but I did. After seeing that, I knew for a fact I could have done a better job. But it was my fault for not taking the job in the first place. Didn't have the confidence. Now is different though.

Phrase it just like that, but to them. Explain your side and why you feel that because of you, more people show up and donate. If they disagree, then do it one more time at the agreed rate, blow it up like crazy, and walk away. You don't have to do it, you don't feel you're getting paid enough, and you could just as soon go elsewhere and make more (if your skill level is up to par).

If you ask for money and they say that they'll just go ipod, then you're screwed. Is it worth possibly losing the gig over? If it were me, I'd chalk this one up as a regular charity (and your learning curve).
