+1 on the oxygen free super-thick gold-plated nonsense for a 3 feet RCA cable. Absolutely makes no difference.
HOWEVER: I personally don't go for the cheapest ones from the 1 Euro basket either, because they tend to be badly made. I also like the more flexible sort of cable which is easier to route around whatever is in the way. Some music stores have RCA patch cables, I like those. Always have some with me as spares in case the audio4 multicore breaks.

If by "upgraded" one means that the plug barrels don't bend and smash when you accidentally step on them, then yes, it makes a world of difference.

I'd also like some upgraded cables that magically appear back in my bag when I leave them somewhere after leaving in a rush (bottles being thrown at DJ booth mid-set).

I am using leftover RCA cables from my home entertainment equipment, MIT branded cable in fact. Big difference in ultimate detail when you route through mixer and back into the sound card as it passes through 2 lengths of cable. I'm not advocating to spend $100+ on 1m lengths of cable, but it can make a difference.

I use shielded cables with Neutrik connectors, they simply last longer and have 0 interference issues. Been using the same ones for over 3 years and keep an extra pair just in case in my bag.
