    Wow, this weekend just failed.

I DJ'd at my regular gig on Saturday. I've been taking a break lately to reset my rig, get my head straight and figure out this whole "DJ Future" thing.

So I went back to the club with all my trusty gear. We had this "big name" in the goth/industrial scene, Dirk Ivens. This guy was a pioneer in the early to late 90's for our scene, involved in bands like The Klinik, Dive and Absolute Body Control. Now, "big name" doesn't mean much when the majority of the club kids were barely out of diapers when that "big name" was something that could resemble a big name.

This guy wpent two hours spinning what a friend called Blegian Nu-Beat. It was terrible. There was no energy, no one was dancing, I couldn't even sit out there it was painfully boring. And then he told the guy who runs the night he was having fun and wanted to keep going...

    It was awful.

Then the local DJ's went on and we kept the floor moving all night long.

    I hate "big names". :-)

The only difference between most big names and everyone is PR.

    Too true

I think you are only ever as 'big' as the last tune you played, 'cause the next one might go down like a french kiss at a family reunion.

I catch myself doing that a lot. i think it's becuz i/otherdjs play and hear their music so much, that they think everyone else gets bored with their music as quickly as i/they do. and, u start to get uncomfortable just standing there waiting for the mix, so u go back to work. and, i think it's kind of part of the essential-mix-show-off-ur-skills dj culture. then again, i've never actually played at a club so i dunno...

I think a lot of it has to do with them producing their own tracks, too.

Getting paid 100$ + drinks to go to an awesome party is tight!

We didnt even have to Dj all night coz 1 of the dudes who lived there wanted to have a turn

Not needing to beatmatch leaves up big room of possibilites. I think most DJs like to be busy and not just stand behind the desk. Otherwise they could poor out drinks whilst a track is running
Better is using that space for creativity. Playing around with a track on deck C and so on.
Effects can take known songs to another level.
Just don't overdo it or the flow will go downhill. Happened to me while switching styles from RnB to Indie <- bad combination
Errors have to be made, to improve overall!

Ya, I tend to play my music for about 3 mins + per song, depending on what style I am playing. If its techno, then I usually run them a lot longer, with some mixing and playing around. I'm not comfortable with controlerism right now, so I try to stay away from this.

I've had some awesome nights and some really bad nights in the club scene in Montreal, it seems a hit and miss sometimes with my selection of clubs.

But, I'm maturing and grown "older"... I tend to seek out now the trendy restaurants and lounges, even if I am still quite young. Montreal has some of the best of both these places.

Its a good learning experience for me as I am getting to know the ins and outs of what makes a club good.

Promotion is always half our battle. My girlfriend always gets her friends to dance while I spin and gets more people to dance by pulling them off the bar. Because playing tracks is just not enough.
    Thank Ya!!!
