Can't argue you with ya there. I suppose that can be a little frustrating at times, Like I said there are always exceptions. "don't bite the hand that feeds ya" which in the end are the customers. Trust me, I hate the BAP just as much as the next guy! Most of my dj'ing is fraternity parties where some of the WORST(in my opinion) music gets played/requested. BUT getting paid x amount of dollars per hour to play mostly shitty and some good music sure as hell beats getting paid min wage to wash dishes (my last job).

True true. Getting paid is nice but this was just a smaller house party for some friends, hence I didn't mind doing it for payment in alcohol, plus they wanted me to play the music I like! Long story short was an awesome night and had a blast! And totally agree with you man, frat parties are definitely something to try to avoid (at least for me lol).

haha yeah frat parties usually suck, but some are fun. I usually try and dj from 12-3ish and from 9-12 I just chat with the chicks/drink a few beers. Glad you enjoyed the small house party, I always enjoy those. Besides, if you aren't having fun you need to find a new hobby/career. plus free alcohol is always a good thing!

when i'm out, and drunk i'll often ask for what is currently playing just to take the piss,
if the guy has no sense of humor then i'll rate him as crap and go else where.

its common round here to wind up other dj's, like sending an attractive girl up to ask
for justin beiber, but then venues round here dont hire serious DJ's, they hire entertainers
    who DJ for the crowd.

DJ's are too cocky now. Of course, we know a ton about music and laugh at those that don't, but is that the right thing to do? lastly, if you are dj'ing for a club most of the time you are there to please/ENTERTAIN the customers so if they ask you to jump you better fuckin' jump! of course there are always exceptions to everything. Most people don't wanna hear the newest underground shit nor hear some dj scratching.
the comment was about two idiotic ways to request - requesting what is currently playing on the expensive, loud pa system, and drunkenly singing a tune no one would understand.

not about being cocky, its about catering to drunk assholes.

also, at the REAL job i *actually* have, i treat people the same way. if something exists that ive created, and you want it and have been on the same email 3 times a week for 3 months explaining where it is and how to use it (web applications, reports, documentation), dont expect me to be chipper the 10th, 11th, 12th time you ask for it.

and to be fair, the place is a bar, so the diversity is off the charts. i get request for metallica during that new BEP song thats just so fucking..

    sigh.

i try not to be cocky, arrogant... im a newb, and sometimes my composure slips and i get irritated. i think i do a good job playing a lot of this and that, but when some old lady is up in my face requesting the same thing over and over, it pushes my limit. its just not the same as a respectful request, followed by my acknowledgement, and them going back to doing whatever it is that they do.

dood, i personally love doing frats, i used to play most of the music in mine when i was in school because no one else could handle trying to select music during a party, and playing em now is a hell of a lot more fun, cause they dont give a fuck if you just get absolutely blasted and do your thing so they can get just as wasted.

get em hooked with some shitty music that the girls like, get them going, then go to town. and if they start to lose it, play another shitty pop song and repeat the process.

hahaha hell yeah. I am in a frat too and obviously take care of the music/dj'ing. I do the EXACT same thing! haha after a few tracks of playing some of the stuff I like people don't even realize what they are listening too and are usually wasted so just go along with it and usually dig it. Plus some of the craziest/funniest things happens at frat parties.

welcome to the real world my friend. seriously, just have fun. They are drunk, who cares what they say. If you can't handle people bitching at you and be able to laugh it off you should probably get a job where you don't encounter humans. about your "real" job..that sucks, but deal with it. Some one has a worse job, I can guarantee you that. I tutor physics/math at the college level and believe me.. I know what you mean. I encounter people that have NO comprehension of math or simple algebra, but I don't sit there and call them dumb/get frustrated after showing them how to solve a problem TEN times ( and I have had to before). If you are really like that at your job I am surprised you still have it and feel bad for your customers.
