While it is widely assumed that the word "football" (or "foot ball") references the action of the foot kicking a ball, there is a historical explanation, which is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. These games were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports (such as polo) often played by aristocrats.

Basically a bunch of American's back in the 1800's took rugby and soccer, and changed the rules, and never changed the name. That's what European's get for sending people across an ocean :P

Honestly though, I hope the Steelers lose just on the basis that one of the guys I work with is a die-hard Steelers fan. And I have nothing against the Packers. Not really a Superbowl I'm going to care that much about honestly.

If the Patriots aren't playing football, I'm getting ready for baseball season.
So what you're saying is that your only a fan if your team is winning, and not really a fan of football?

I'm sad Da Bears didn't make it... I'll watch for the ads and cheer for whichever team causes injuries.

Yup. If New England teams aren't playing, I'm generally not watching. I enjoy sports, don't get me wrong, but I have no small touch of regional pride when it comes to them. I do the same for any sport really, besides car racing. (Of which, I do enjoy myself some Nascar... but Formula 1 is a much more enjoyable circuit).
