If you weren't going to be partying like a rockstar in the crowd I would highly recommend a DSLR that does HD video but when you're in crowded areas and want to be nice and mobile it's hard to beat pocket camcorders. If you plan on using your video camera for future things (blogging, your own personal videos, travel) I'd definitely recommend a DSLR but I suppose there's nothing wrong a relatively cheap investment like a pocket cam.

I had a full DSLR rig at ultra last year, and it was fine…well…i also had a press pass, so I didn't fight through crowds as much.

Also, I hate the HD video on DSLRs thing…they're really bad at it for the price…the models that even have a mic suck at recording audio…i guess the sensors are a bit bigger than pocket cameras and you can get "nice dof, bro" levels of so-called artistry that make any photographer worth their salt want to rape you with your own lens. But for those prices, if video is what you want to do, you can do a lot better.

For what prices? The prices of the pocket camcorders? Do you have examples of better products for that price?

if you think you'll get nice (ie listenable) sound out of these in a loud environment with a lot of bass... you wont. low light conditions wont be handled too well either. and small camera's = hello mr shaky vision - especially when using ANY amount of zoom

google came up with this.. i didn't read it

    Which model?

What's the battery life on a full charge? How much recording time does it get? What's the audio quality like?

I don't expect the audio to be fantastic being it only has a mono speaker, but I doubt I'll be right by the speakers being this festival is 10, 000+ so I'm gonna assume the sound will be decent in the middle of the action.

Ultra HD. I've used it a couple of times to record my shows and the audio is adequate.

Full charge? I've never used it for long long periods of time, but I'd guess 5-6 hours.
