S4 is my choice too, but I KNOW that I don't need analogue mixer in my controller. At least there's no controller with analogue mixer that I like as much as the S4.

NS6 is a great potential alternative with analogue mixer, but it's not as good for Traktor as the S4 is.

The MC6000 is great, but it's focused for mobile professionals mostly - weddings, corporate events, etc. Two mic ins, powerful booth out, 4 analogue inputs for attaching other gear. It really is feature rich, but as a controller, it gives a more basic set controls over the software.

The S4 is, if I could say it this way, a more creative tool focused on the pleasure of sound manipulation. It has better layout and allows control of more features. If you really need to extend the I/O options, you can just add a live mixing board such as http://www.decks.co.uk/products/mackie/802VLZ3

Since you are on Windows, it's best to find a way to test how the S4 drivers will work on your laptop before buying. But hey - it won't be the OS' fault, it'd be the user
Hmm i should see if they would let me at the guitar center i go to sometimes >.> which reminds me that I need talk to tech support to get another return lable for my headphones

Yeah dude go for it, the S4 is worth it. Ask what GC's return policy is. If I am not mistaken it is 30 day return policy so you should be good.

i visited my local guitar center to check out the s4 and after a good bit of messing with it and talking to the GC rep, he told me that returning midi controllers for full refunds isn't as easy as it seems. apparently when a piece of hardware comes with a fully working piece of software, returning said product might not go so well.

"when it comes down to it, returns with bundled software present themselves to threats of copyright infringement."

    ...

    just thought i'd say something.

    VCI-300=awesome btw :]

Yeah, well it depends on the representative really. Because when I picked up my Maschine someone else was just returning his because for some odd reason it did not work with his MacBook Pro. So I have actually seen with my own eyes someone return a MIDI controller back due to it not working properly with your hardware.

But like I said, it depends on the representative. I would personally ask them what the policy is on such situations, and get it down in writing from a manager.

However, the VCI is a great tool as well. I am just completely in love with my S4, and I always have new shit I am learning with it. It's truly insane.

plus I'm sure that there is a way to make S4 work fine on any decent windows computer. It may cut your nerves and waste lot of precious time, of course, but at the end it should start working.

the chances are also high that it'll work straight out of the box, too.

    Hey Coldfuzion,

how are you routing your Maschine software in the S4? Do use them together?

At the moment I use them separately. Haven't really had the patience to try to route my Maschine through my S4, however I should try it.

I returned my first S4 to GC and they didn't give me any issues. Hell, the manager replaced it and was friendly about it. Just said if I had any more issues just bring it back and they'll change it out, extending my 1 month return policy by another month. It was really cool of him. Told him I just wanted to replace the unit itself with another one, and that was that. And for some crazy reason the 2nd S4 I got came with 2 CD's lol - so I suppose I'll have 2 TP2's? Not sure how good that will do me haha.

do you at least use the Maschine controller to control Traktor?

I'll hopefully get a Maschine in March and have great mapping plan in my head, which I'm starting to put on paper. It's so nice that you can quickly switch from Maschine to MIDI mode . Maschine as a MIDI will be an amazing supplementary controller for the S4!

By the time I learn to use the Maschine as production tool, NI will add the internal routing

Nope, I strictly use it with its software.
