OP, for starting out the all in one hardware and software packages like the NI S4 are a very good deal.

I don't really care for all in one controllers, the modular approach is better in my opinion.

a problem with a lot of these recommendations is that they will leave you with little money for the software. No one ever takes that into account.

I'd buy traktor, the soundcard and either a mixer or a controller and then save money up for the other one.

You might be able to get good quality gear for cheaper second hand.

I did not learn on digital, but cd decks. But if I was to learn now, I would definitely buy a traktor midi controller (VCI-100 being one option, or others depending on budget), and start learning on that. Have used traktor for 3 years now, play only with it in clubs in paris, it's a software that can take you from newbie to semi pro.
Audio 2 is excellent solution for price and full digital. If you are used to DVS, go audio 8.
I would not bother going to torq/virtual dj/deckadance, but it's only a humble, european opinion. If you have a large budget, go s4.
Small sound card + several midi controllers is a good way to get yourself quickly in pace with controllerism.
Oh, and btw: Midi fighter is definitely fun to play with. Why not add it to your setup ?

xwax is banging. Getting it all worked out is a pain though.

I don't know what your price range is so I will list several options, some of which already mentioned.

    1.) VCI-100/Twitch + Audio 2
    2.) Kontrol S4
    3.) Analogue Mixer + Audio 2 + Kontrol X1
    4.) Kontrol X1 + Audio 2 + Laptop keyboard
    5.) Hercules RMX/Behringer BCD3000 + Audio 2 (optional)

how come only semi pro?? theres a fair few "pro's" that use this and technically once you play out and recieve money from doing so it makes it a "profession" .... eg a professional dj

Twitch hands down if I were in your shoes. Has soundcard built in, good price, runs serato software. Win all around.
