    Ha...my point exactly.

Yes, the experience (event) might be bad, but the experience you gain from a bad experience isn't bad experience.

Wing it for a while with whatever you get your hands on. Get some compilations and keep a keen ear out for anything with a good hook. Write down the lyrics for anything you hear but don't know to look it up later.

Building any decent music collection takes a looooong time. Whenever I break into a new field of music, it always takes me around a year before I feel really comfortable with my collection in that area. Last year I started listening to a lot of 80's boogie and I'm just now getting to a point where I'm feeling anywhere near comfortable with playing it out because it's taken me that long to get familiar with all of the obligatory classics and then find a bunch of obscurities and sleepers on top of that. Watching movies, hearing the radio, and consuming media in general. The search is long.

there are many many classics from the 80s to be played, i just recently did an all 80s night and it went great, 80s aint what id normally play either but i was asked to do the gig and it was so much fun, i even got disco mirror balls installed and all

the trick with the 80s is, like any music really, you have got to read the crowd and pase the classics, i find thinks like whitesnake and fleetwood mac go down really well early on in the night and stuff like def leppard good in the middle with well known sing along songs go well later in the night like the proclaimers and things like brian adams summer of 69/wham wake me up/madness baggy trousers goes down with people who want to dance, but it all depends on the crowd, if its mostly males, they'll want ACDC/BON JOVI/BILLY IDOL and even MC HAMMER etc but ladies tend to love ABBA/some ELTON JOHN/DIANNA ROSS/MADONNA/BILLY JOEL etc. and also you can NEVER EVER go wrong with some Michael Jackson especially Billy Jean and the likes.
