so hating on linux is okay but hating on apple is not? are you serious? i specifically made my post to point out that i considered bigheadmikelove's comment inappropriate trolling.

Hating on apple in a thread that has nothing to do with apple is not okay. I understand what you were doing, but all it takes is a spark like that to turn this thread into a senseless flame war that has nothing to do with the subject of the thread.

    Now back on topic please.

but hating on apple in a thread that has something to do with apple is fine? no, that is something which isn't tolerated on this forum!

but hating on linux in a thread that has something to do with linux is tolerated!

it's a fucking double standard. bigheadmikelove did nothing but hating--there was no contribution.

EDIT: i mean, i didn't write anything constructive, either. but i would have had something to contribute. as a linux user, i was pissed by bigheadmikelove's comment.

Not to say that I was the most constructive in my opening comment, but to say that I said nothing pertaining to the OP's thread is not true...I stated a person that was close to me (hell I still crashed at dads here and again when he was using linux) experience with the operating system...I personally don't like all the tar/.gz (or some such gobblygook) to get a program to open...it's my opinion. I then came back after being trolled and put out the qualification for the comment...I apologize if I offended your operating system sensibilites...

...and for the record I hate mac as well, PC all the way for me

Also there are a few double standards when it comes to negativity around here, but all in all it's still the best cross genre/edm/djing forum I've found.

Seems like goodd fortune to have found this thread today especially as i have a two hour lecture from the one and only richard stallman in a few hours.
Couple of questions for the original poster.
Ive been thinking about this for a while as i pretty much only use windows now for traktor and Ableton. How does the CPU load compare between running in wine and running strait in windows ? Have you had any experience of the mixxx software for djing in linux I ran it for a while not so long ago but found myself going back to traktor as I dont have the skill needed yet to tweak it in my direction .

Also whilst there is a linux thread whats your view on the gnome 3 vs unity debate ?

@Everyone with the "PC vs Mac" posts: You DO understand that Linux has absolutely NOTHING to do with ANY of that? Linux runs on just about every piece of hardware. The Linux kernel will run fine on that Macbook Air, ThinkPad X1 or Aspire S3. What you are all referring to is the pre-installed operating system on most computers, Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows. The funny thing is that most people don't understand that Apple uses the same hardware as everybody else, so you can actually theoretically run Mac OS X on virtually any computer you want to. I wouldn't recommend it for legal reasons though...

Nice! I've seen some lectures from him but never seen him in real life before.

The CPU load is pretty much 1:1 with Windows. I'm not seeing any overhead at all, if anything it runs better because I don't have a bunch of crap running in the background (anti-virus, uninvited updates, etc). I personally haven't used mixxx, I've never really used conventional DJing software much since I jumped right into the digital world. The only "real" DJ software I've used is Deckadance.

Setting up wine is too hard, just take a Saturday and you'll get everything setup great. Just remember, Google and IRC are your friends.

First note: this isn't a PC/Mac thread, OP is asking about linux.
    Second note: tarballs suck.
Third note: I have recently switched to Traktor, but I was using Mixxx on ubuntu, and really enjoyed using linux. Mostly because of boot times, and how fast it can all be. Mixxx may not look pretty but it works so well. I've been inspired now, I'm going to go and hook up some timecode to Mixxx, haven't done it yet. If you can get around Linux, its good. Ableton though?!? I love it!

interesting thread. both my laptops dual boot between kubuntu and windows - but tend to use windows these days for traktor. tbh hadn't really thought about trying to get it (or ableton) to run under wine.

i still remember when wine could just about run windows solitaire - long long time ago

for work i'm ssh'd into various linux (or freebsd) servers all day - but wouldn't mind spending less laptop time with windows too...
