If I wanted to use my S2 (instead of CDJs) with an external mixer such as a DJM-850 would I need to purchase an additional soundcard (Traktor Audio X, etc.) to make this work?

    Appreciate any responses.
Why would you do this? If you see no reason to buy CDJ's then there is no reason to take an S2 and mix externally with it. The only thing you would use then is the Transport section and the jogs.

If you want to mix externally buy CDJ's or TT's. You have a compact, all in one solution already, with no need to blow 1700 bucks for no reason.

You're absolutely right, and I already even own 1200s. But I am only interested in the djm 850 or 900 but didn't want to spend that cash just to learn and hone mixing skills. Once I saw the s2 for sale I decided to jump on it, plus the size makes it convenient to practice in between travels.

But I now realize when I'm ready for the DJM, to get one that's traktor certified, hook it with my 1200s, and keep the s2 on the side for portability or even sell it. I already miss my 1200s, and the effect quality on the DJMs are seriously beautiful. The only reason I didnt initially just save for a DJM was not knowing how much I would really enjoy mixing and wasting $1500-$2k, as I only used my tables to scratch.

Also keep in mind that if all you really want are Traktors effects, you can run them in Send-Return mode via the S/R loop on the DJM.

i use a djm900 with s2 for transport control.. i used to use 2 kontrol x1 but i prefer to have platters

now that the djm850 is out.. it's logically the best choice for this setup.. you do not need the link and quantize functions on the 900 because they only work with CDJs..

the 850 has the same 4/4 soundcard as the 900.. better effects in my opinion.. and cheaper..

why use a djm when s2/s4 has built in mixer? because the effects on the pioneer mixers are world class and there is NO WAY traktor's effects even comes close to what the sound quality and effects of a djm 850/900/2000 can put out..

i love traktor and it has great effects but they still have a ways to go to catch up with the new effects pioneer put on their new generation mixers.. start with noise for example.. you listening NI?

OK. What I don't quite get is why you got the S2 instead of the S4.

With the S4 you can use your SL1200's with control vinyl to control decks C and D.
That way you get the feel of the SL1200's but you'll always have the control of the S4, which you can get accustomed to, really fast and really well so you can basically play totally wasted with your S4, eyes closed and everything, and still rock a set.

The scenario you're currently in requires an external mixer for the SL1200's which is gonna run you at least another $800, just for home use.

My advice is that you sell/return the S2 and get a S4 for maximum enjoyment.

I really want a DJM850 or 900 but didn't want to spend all that $$$ just to learn mixing, so I bought the s2 cause it was only $399.

Instead I'm going to keep going at it with the s2, practice mixing (not just using sync) for a good 6 months or so....

Sell the s2 OR just keep it for its portability.....buy a new DJM that's Traktor ready and just use that with my 1200s.....I've been around the DJM's and the quality of the sound and effects sound way too superior than these controllers....but I don't want to buy it until I'm sure it's worth my $$$ and time...

heres a question, figured i might as well throw this in this thread since its related,
if i have the s2 and a djm850, running the s2 on 2 of the mixers channels, can i add a cdj to one of the other free channels and mix with cd's or usb into my mix while still running both s2 decks and traktor on the other channels?
i know its a "shouldve got an s4 instead" situation, but its more out of curiosity than anything else at this point lol
