Do you plan running cables 20+ feet? if so you would want to balance the audio by either plugging the RCAs into DI boxes and running XLR cables or hooking up to a mixer with balanced outs.
    Setup:Technic 1200's Mk2, Denon DN-X120 Mixer, Korg PadKontrol, Traktor Audio 6, Numark N4. CPU/Software:Lenovo G550/Traktor Pro 2.

Guitar Center has the Mackie Thump 12" for $199 a piece. Def a step up from the behringer speakers.
Throw in stands and wires and you'd be right around $500

Mackie Thumps 100%. I've had mine for well over 5 years and have never had any issues.

IMO, dont spend all the money on a sub-par sound system, you will regret it later. Use the money to rent out a system, then keep saving, id say at least $1000. That can get you a very respectable sub, speakers and if needed an amp. In my research to find a decent, portable sound system though, your ideal budget should be about 1600-2000. Yes, thats a lot to save for some speakers, but its a long term investment.

If youre not looking for long term, then dont bother wasting money on a cheap system, just rent.

renting for house parties isn't the most cost effective option. It would prob cost a min of $100 a night for the house parties. So say you rent speakers 5 weeks in a row you could have just went and bought 2 speakers. If you want something better just save up some more. I only rent when I'm doing shows or stages over 500 people. Buy 2 decent tops, save up a few weeks, buy the matching sub.

For small venues could self powered monitors work? When I purchased my Rokit 6s my friend who turned me on to them told me he had played small venues with them and a sub. Depending on the venue and atmosphere it may be another option?
Lenovo T400, Ableton Live 8, Axiom 25, APC40, Auido 2, KRK Rokit 6, Pioneer HJD1500 and a wish list spanning coast to coast.
