Fighting is the only true sport for me, MMA (UFC strikeforce etc...) K-1 and boxing.
all known sports were derived as a means to compete without having to fight...
...by people who couldn't fight.

that is what fighting is, there is no more form of equal competition than another mans will to win VS your will to win, you, him, and someones has to lose, as soon as your sport is dependent upon machinery and equipment as oppose to the competitors alone it is no longer pure sport, its watered down, granted that even fighting is watered down these days, but still, sport as a concept is a means to test a mans ability's, when you are more dependent upon the equipment than you are upon yourself the test of sport becomes watered down.
just my feeling about competition.
may as well continue this discussing while we're talkin sportsand by no means do i consider myself 'right' here, just interesting talkin...
im saying competition against one self is greater than competition against another. that to me just suggests that one of them either trained harder than the other or was naturaly better. the people who do these sports, while they may not use machines, spend hours and hours getting to that level. maybe ive used the word competition in the wrong sense here, because i agree with what you're saying now that ive written all this :P
this is just a nice exchange of opinions (nothin to see hear, move along now),
but I do get your point, pushing yourself past your own previous best at whatever it may be in a personal, internal form of competition with yourself is very real for everyone who takes pride in their work, hobby or whatever, but there is no external measurement for the fans where it concerns these internal accomplishments, so I dont really think of that as sport, more along the lines of personal growth.
(edit) I dont quite consider myself "right" either, just right about what I think, not much else.
Cycling FTW, nothing says epic like multiple mountains and events that span up to 9 hours (single day) and 5 hours a day for weeks? Sports where if you get hurt there is no time out, things just keep going? Also I believe that cycling has one of the highest injury/death rates making it one of the most dangerous sports.
