Are you really taking that much offence over this? The solution is extremely simple, yet you provide a convoluted half-measure instead.

There's no practical difference between the two solutions - you save yourself one DA/AD conversion step and an RCA cable.

You also lose a hardware input on the mixer, and the REC output port.

You act like I was telling the guy to grab a y-cable and plug into his line-in on his laptop

This is exactly what you were doing. Only worse since you're wasting more of the mixer's features.

For the channel you have the rec out plugged into - you must select USB as your input with the selector knob

This is also completely wrong. The hardware input switches are irrelevant to the REC OUT of the mixer. Anything coming through the Master Output will also be picked up by the REC output.
