Well I do it with Passion since 15+ years...but with time I do consider myself being good in my style and do not accept every Job offer just 'cause it's my Hobby.

When I realise that bookers are just looking for a cheap (non expensive) guy to rock their place, I do not accept the gig...There's no reason I sell myself under my value.
It's not because it is my Hobby that I have a big "SALE / DISCOUNT" tag over my head. When I Play for less than my value then it is for People I consider being friends or for charity Events. (At charity Events I even do it otherwise, I ask for the full Price and at the end of the night I put the difference between "regular" Price and "Friend Price" into the Jar where they collect the Money for the charity, it is always a nice surprise for the Organisation when I do it this way)

It isn't 'cause we make it with Passion, that we pay less on Music and gear so why shouldn't we, if our Job is done professionaly, get less Money than anybody else?

There are two types of DJ in the business.

The first works weddings, corporate gigs, radio, and/or private events. The monetary gain is there. You work on playlists which suit the client. In this case, it is a career.

The second works clubs, raves, house parties, etcetera. This DJ is in it for the artform. Whether being a turntablist, producer, controllerist, or a mixture of all 3, this type of DJ does it for the love of the music. Monetary gain may be sought, but is not a guarantee.

Hope this answers your questions. NBL

Apparently the Clubs in "Nowhere" are better than over here...If you are resident in a Club here there's no place for own "artform"...You Play what crowd wanna hear that means "Mainstream"...If you are Guest DJ (and you must have a certain Name allready to be booked as guest) then you can mix your own Thing...but People gonna expect you to Play your own hits or your designated style...so there's still no place for creativity in it.
I remember Martin Garrix having been destroyed by the critic in newspaper over a gig over here with the words "He played a Mix of boring House & Electro instead of the EDm-Style that was expected from him....He not even played his huge Hit Animals"...Well apparently he tried to be creative and to go a new path.

it's Passion for me 1st and 2nd, what little money helps a lot when there is some but it way often goes towards new gear/music and as I'm a 'promoter' that money also goes into new events. Some do well, some loose way more, and a couple of very painful ones loose me so much I have to sell all my gear (happened more than once - worst was having to sell my newly purchased DJM 2000 and CDJ 2000s for a small festival that didn't do as well as hoped)

Would love one day for it to be making me lots of money (wouldn't we all?) but if I'd not done what I'd done and taken the risks I had, I would have had years of not doing much at all. Coming up on my 15th year doing my Alt night, and hopefully starting a couple of Manchester based dance events 2016.

So, I guess it's passion for me (and lots of reciepts I really need to get up to date with for annual accounts)

Second Thing is you haven't that much of regular customer in Vegas but more Tourists so no matter what you Play the Club gonna be full again the next week as other People gonna be in Town.

does he has to play his ONE hit? I bet it gets old...so the answer is to make more hits...

Well apparently this 1 Hit was expected from the Mainstream People.

When I find time to got out I enjoy DJs leaving the Mainstream-Path or guys who aren't so selfish that they only Play their own produced stuff.
