I've been both in NY an LA.

Didn't really like LA... if I was on the west coast I'd go to San Francisco.

NY was amazing though.

Of course I never spent more than two weeks on each city so what do I know...

Definitely, definitely, definitely try to visit both. They're two of the most interesting cities in the country.

New York: you can be broke and lonely, but you'll never be bored.

San Francisco: You can be broke and bored, but you'll never be lonely.

I think in most other US cities it's very easy to become all three.
