I'd pop a vote up for a DJ mixer, having gone from a traditional setup to mixing internally on a VCI-100 back to mixing with a proper mixer

I had a Pioneer DJM-800 and thought it was lovely; given that you're running an Audio 4 DJ however I'd probably pop for a Pioneer DJM-400, Allen & Heath Xone 22 or Rane TTM-56 (or something similarly decent and 2-channel) but depends if you want to mix internally or externally

Either that or as you mentioned get a soundcard with XLR outputs; then you can skip the mixer question entirely!

Xone 4D for me, started back with the VCI 100 got a 4D and love it, ease of set up and general quality of the mixer.

In regards to the mixer question, I'm pretty much at the same spot. I've decided to go for a DJ mixer, it's just not as cramped and frees up controls on whatever controller you're using for much more interesting stuff Since I also do streaming radio stuff, I'm currently totally in love with the DJM700 (has XLR mic on top, can put FX on mic channel if needed), along with just 4 Xone 1D for a really nice superknob/"superbutton" four deck setup with as little shift-ing as humanly possible (it really annoys me, soft takeover also just is a really poor workaround /endrant). Everything still in the works though
Yes it worked out fine and I still have two extra 1Ds sitting around I'm going to sell. I moved back to just the 4D because my setup was getting too wide and it was hard to reach my decks, plus it would have been a pin to bring out, just having a 4D is dead simple and with practice I got used to using the 4D only map which I posted above.

BTW I'm banned from DJF until February for hurting some mod's ego by publicly embarrassing him and proving him wrong, seriously.

I think A & H is advertising that the xone:dx is compatible with DJ software other than ITCH. Check out the specs at http://www.xone.co.uk/

If thing is compatible with TPro AND as responsive as the VCI-300 with ITCH, I would jump on this and go back to TPro in a heartbeat.

(ITCH is gonna try and make a run at Traktor with 4 decks and built in effects in a future release. You tube videos for this piece of kit and you'll see working 4 deck versions with effects of ITCH.)

It comes out at the end of this month!!!

The DX is cool but not enough buttons to control Traktor. It's like a mini 4D.

Well, imo the 4D is way too big to carry around + the middle part is just a mixer (EQ3) so getting a Xone:92 (EQ4) + the D's would get you a 4Ds Joke aside, there ain't no perfect mixer yet (imo). For me it would be a hybrid kinda mixer with everything built in & tweakable thru a software...as Bento would say "modular" Best you could do is wait a bit to see what A&H does on the next generation of the :92...it HAS to have, at least, an entirely midi mappable layout & not just 4 controls as the current 92 + all the sound & build qualities.
