Maybe the limitation of hardware manufacturers pays off to them now by essentially having the monopoly and being able to set their own 2500-3200$ price tag for a 4 channel mixer (without which 4chan mixing is not possible)

NI and Serato are the same in this respect. Their software and hardware are totally proprietary when it comes to DVS.

Neither will work with either.

Of course the big difference is that you can use Traktor Pro (non DVS) with any old soundcard and just hit buttons or use midi. You cannot do this with SSL.

Oh sorry, I was being retarded - I forgot that you could only use other soundcards with TP and not for the DVS.. my bad!

I usually consider Serato the Apple of the discussion, and NI the Microsoft.

I think Serato just wants to control their product and there is really nothing wrong with that. Keep in mind they had 14-bit MIDI controllers and much more advanced HID stuff before NI had it hooked to Traktor, and NI still doesn't have adequate 14-bit support... though there really aren't any controllers that do either.

However, Traktor has a more user friendly system, that while it can cause more problems, and you have to worry about compatibility a bit more, it can be used by more people for more things (in my opinion).

Though, it would be nice if Serato just offered lower tier soundcards and smaller MIDI controllers for people who don't want to blow their savings on a VCI-300 or one of those Rane mixers.

Thats right. I 'believe' they are working on a new SL card.
Strikes me as a bit odd that they will have 4 decks but no 4 deck interface.
The new Rane mixer is not aimed at the user base. Its a club mixer.

If you have the SL3 you can use three decks once SSL2.0 is released.

All other old hardware is limited to 2 decks

serato basically built up all this hype, opened our imaginations to what it could be (which was a company mistake underestimating there users imagination), showed some pretty sick new features (not new to the dj world *cough*traktor*cough*), then put in the fine print it's going to cost you a few grand..

for that price that thing better print money!
