Yeah that was touched on earlier in the thread. What makes me chuckle though is the alter-attitude to remixes as opposed to the originals.

I mean I guess no self respecting EDM dj is gonna play a Lady Gaga Radio Edit but if FOAMO makes a Fidget mix the EDM djs will be all over it for a few weeks (whilst its still cool) cus its like "look im playing Lady Gaga but its an exclusive Foamo mix how kitsch". Does that make it any less Lady Gaga... nope not in my eyes so the light-snobbery is just all to evident.

Lady Gaga is Lady Gaga. If a DJ says i dont play pop music i only play EDM then dont play Lady Gaga remixes.

The even funnier thing is that after a lot of time has passed it becomes trendy to play the original not the remix, in a kind of "im cool and ill play a radio song cus i dont care what people think" and then the clubbers dont care cus secretly they like the original.

As for the "top 40 DJs" well im not one of them. Im lucky enough to be playing with FOAMO in a few weeks and the Jackbeats and then Rusko after that but in between i do my Top 40 mondays and have laugh and pay the rent.

Like i said earlier, its horses for courses. You play whats right for the night and the crowd. Get caught up in the "cool race" and you can find yourself being uncool and its your own fault. I see to many djs trying so hard so be cool they end up way off the mark.

Try hard but not too hard.

Its definitely a pop v. EDM thing. With the pop you can jump around crazily from one genre to another with fairly wide abandon, whereas a lot of EDM is a 'mood and tone' thing whereby you want to build a groove, so you have songs with the same musical tropes playing one after another.

I also reckon that most EDM remixes of pop songs are fairly rubbish. Pop, for better or worse, often has the most 'on the bleeding edge of cool' producers and the best hooks. The EDM remixes often pale in comparison. Also EDM and pop often sounds incongruous when played together.

Going through my collection, I have a LOT of remixes over the originals. However, these tend to be EDM remixes of EDM choons or EDM friendly tunes. I'll quite often pick the deep house re-rub of a nu-disco tune over the original or vice versa. Quite often labels will give remix duties to people in a similar genre, and a lot of the time they improve on the originals.

For example; favourite remix of the last 6 months:

The MCDE remix of DJ Sprinkles - Grand Central.

Yeah total compromise in most cases.
The same people churn out the remixes. You can be pretty sure that with every big pop single of an electronic leaning there will be the usual suspects. Im just glad when theres a Mock and Toof mix or the even rarer Prins Thomas mix.
The MCDE remix of DJ Sprinkles - Grand Central is great remix bassy and jackin' .

If i was an EDM dj id be pretty bored by the usual suspects.

I agree about the freedom thing. Im much more free to mix genres and get a bit crazy with stuff at the pop nites than any EDM based nites ive played.

Always look for the deeper/disco/out there mix. Most remixes are simply pointless and unfortunately ive got shed-loads clogging up my collection.

Yeah, I guess at the end of the day it depends if the remixes are any good or useful.

That great Aeroplane remix of Grace Jones - Williams Blood was played to death but I also have the Greg Wilson remix - a bit more chilled, still recognisable and useful in its own way.

I also got the Herve remix of Fake Blood - Mars. I though 'great! Just a bit different, if anything even more stoopid'. Now I feel stupid playing it because it is almost the same and not really quite as good.

Greg Wilson is one my heros. Last saw him at Xmas on my birthday at the Electric Chair End of Year Riots (what a surprise eh!!!). Great nite.

Aeroplane mixes are generally good. We tried booking them but they were stoopidly expensive.

Hah yeah that Fake Blood remix was everywhere, still get requests on the pop nite for it. I prefer his earlier works hahahaha

A couple of Fake Blood's new choons are pretty good - he's gone a bit loopy-house on a couple of them, but with the old-school style snare breaks.

Seeing Aeroplane next week at Matter. Gonna hide out in room 2 'cos I've heard some people there have some attitude and Sasha is in room 1... they've got a good remix out at the moment of Lindstrom & Christabelle - Baby Can't Stop.

Will check the Youtube later when I'm somewhere Youtube isn't blocked!

Do Electric Chair still have events then - I'd thought they'd wound it up?

Yeah the You Tube is just Wiseguys - Ooh La La ..!

Elektrics as a company still lots of stuff but the Electric Chair always did a Xmas bash on the 27th Dec and when the actual night stopped at the Music Box they decided to carry on with the Xmas Riot (as its called). Which i was chuffed about as its always on my biffday.

Quite fancy the Electric Elephant festival that they do in Croatia. My pals went last year and had a blast but my missus is not keen on giving up Glasto for it.

Lindstrom & Christabelle - Baby Can't Stop. yep the Aeroplane mix is sweet.
Have a good un next week. Bollocks to Sasha.
