Wow! Forget controllerism it's oldtimerism on here!

Yes today people more and more ARE indeed focused on the DJ, so believe it or not you do have to "perform". You think when people go see Ean that they are not like mesmerized by him doing a Midi Fighter routine? Come on now. Isn't a part of all of this being a performer? What sense does it make then in the midst of building up the crowd to all of a sudden disappear from sight? It's old school and I think it breaks the energy level tremendously. It's bad showmanship, plain and simple.

    partying:

    you're doing it wrong.

if the energy breaks for you completely because the dj goes to pick another tune for a second, you're focusing on the wrong thing. personally i'm against the dj being the focus of a night. it's about the music for god sakes. you don't complain about not being able to see the lighting engineer, yet he/she contributes a lot to the atmosphere of a night as well.

why not look at it in a positive light: the dj is going to pick that tune that's going to (hopefully) be mixed into the current song in a dope way. why not try and think "man i can't wait to see what song he's picking" and have him ducking away build even *more* energy.

just my thoughts. to each his own.

I think that's the brilliant thing about Digital DJ ing is that you don't have to do that ducking in the dark stuff. I don't know about you but i am thinking 2 songs out when I am playing the current song. If I need to drop a bomb on the dance floor I know which tracks to pull out. If I need to cool off the floor I know those too. Flipping through whatever should be a thing of the past. I also think that the DJ blending into the woodwork days are over.

People go to hear/see their favorite DJs these days. It has become part of the "where are we going tonight?" thought process. It can also make the difference on whether a club has a slow night or not.

Yeah...sure...you go to see a specific DJ.....but why?

To hear his music?...or watch him be a monkey?

I can see you saying...its BOTH.

see my sig, i'm with daft punk on this issue....

dj woodwork is a great dj name
We don't believe in the star system. We want the focus to be on the music. If we have to create an image, it must be an artificial image. That combination hides our physicality and also shows our view of the star system. It is not a compromise-daftpunk

I have very rarely gone to see a specific DJ because of his looks it's because of the music he plays! that's not changed since I was kid going, it's the music i want to hear nothing more nothing less..

EG i was out at a friends 39th birthday last Friday small club/bar playing mainly r&b soul and funk, the guy played a classic tune from back in that era, he then played one i wanted to hear because i knew him strategy by archie bell and the drells, trust me that tune not him was what had me up dancing >.<

he could have happily been crate digging for the next track i would never have noticed.

Who said anything about looks? Of course you go to hear the music. It's also the crowd hyping skills that come out to play these days. That's why, and I am talking about EDM here the big build up has become so important. All I'm saying is that it completely breaks rapport if you turn your back to the crowd for a few minutes to flip through your cd booklet.

OT> thread hijack / Is a DJ performer or what?

nope, i am with the new guy on this one. And welcome to the forum Arclyte btw!

DJ is personification of the music. People watch and get distracted by what DJ do, because they are taught to watch the performer in any kind of show (be it theatre, stand up or concert or whatever). They really do care about the one that is in centre of the stage, more than you admit.

    Some logic proofs:
-on the same night a more charismatic DJ of equal stance (and skill) will gets more applause than the other (sometimes it has nothing to do with music...sad but true.)
-when you fuck up something during your set (little trainwreck, missed beat or whatever minor fault that doesnt stop music dead), ppl will notice only when you ACT like you fucked up. If you act normal, majority of ppl will not even notice something's wrong.

Granted, i have just a few years of clubbing experience to make really good point, but i am great observer and cannot unthink that DJ is really a performer and part of being great DJ is being really good performer.

Thank you Kupujte_Pytle I was beginning to think I was in the wrong spot. I am not sure what the question was anymore either, LOL .

I didn't think i was the only one who also went to go see DJs actually do their thing. Particularly with EDM people are facing the booth when they dance theses days.
