Keep it simple stupid.
Really though, go with what he wants and can realistic afford to put into the hobby, and then just learn the basics and move up. With awesome equipment, there's no need to go into 3+ deck mixing with FX and all that at first. He can do the basics on good equipment, it'll just let him grow easier later.
Buying the most expensive gear is not going to make you sound better. Start off with some cdj 800 and a djm 400. If you get the top of line gear and you don't know how to use it it's going to make you look like a douche. You might as well buy a Ed Hardy shirt to go along with the cdj-2000.
I'm not saying this to be a dick, but learn the basics and go from there.
You could buy all the best paint, best brushes in the world. But it won't make learning to be an artist/painter any easier...

My dream setup with unlimited money is:
Macbook Pro 15'' with core i7, 8gb Ram + 320 SSD
+ 4 iPads 64gb with Wifi+3g - 1 iPad for each deck , total 4 decks
+ High Quality Powered USB Hub to connect your 4 iPads
+ external 4 stereo outs firewire audio interface (You have lots of options here...)
+ 4 decks analog mixer (Pionner or A&H, deppends on what you see more on the parties/clubs that you go)
This way you would only need to get your notebook, 4 ipads (or two if you feel that two decks is enough for you) and your firewire audio interface to the club that you will play
you have an unlimited amount of money????!!
