    Default think outside the box

I was running into it a long time ago, DJing, practicing, digging through stacks, and realized I needed to think ahead if I was going to dj long term. I've started bringing on trustworthy, good friends and teaching them to DJ. That was three years ago, now I am a professional engineer with a 7 month old kid, and part of our city's hottest Audio/Visual crew. We are doing something different (for our part of the world) that our experience (avg age 27) helps with. Not to mention we have extra money from our day jobs for the kit we need to pull it off. It only works because we're all in it for fun, and if it goes nuclear we can al walk away.

We have gotten to a point where bar managers and promoters are coming to us asking us to play their place. We work in that they are responsible for most of the promotion and we are "artists". Since there's a crew of us we tend to draw in our friends no problem and we do alright. That way we don't need to waste time promoting other than to the new people that come in the door and like what they see/hear. I feel for you all and I wish you all the best keeping the decks alive.

Between work and family, I have a hard time finding time to devote to searching for music, prepping tracks and general messing around with my equipment, let alone finding and playing the occasional gig (which I would like to do). When my son arrives, there will be even less time to play with. After all, family comes first.

anyone else in the same stage as me, or have similar issues? I would be very interested to hear how 30+ part time dj's handle the balance between work family and beats. any thoughts appreciated!

Yeah man im 37 and I used to play hard house 10 years ago and throw big gigs. Along with that came all the drugs and alcohol so I slowed down. I got married and now have a 3 year old girl and new boy.

I work as an Audio Engineer full time and recently got into digital djing with a Vestax VCI400 and Traktor etc.

Finding time is a huge problem, I get home from work and my little girl wants only me until she goes to bed. I love that and wouldnt change it but it dies mean that having a mix is getting harder and harder. Considering selling the gear I just bought.

I dont need to mix out regularly at all but DJing is a hobby that takes time which is becoming more and more scarce.

I wish I knew the answer
