I use to use Pro Tools but the propriety hardware thing sucks. Apple Logic has been the best for me...but you need a mac. Can't go wrong with Ableton Live though. It's geared at a fast workflow and is amazing for it. Some will argue it's more for creative purposes rather than full on mastering but if you know what you want and are using vst's then theres no problem. The limiting, compression and eqing plugins that come with it are great anyway. Making Complex arrangements is easy too, especially when you have tracks mapped to midi....and who doesn't like midi here?

I am actually only using the Lite version of Live that I got with my M-audio Axiom. It's got a limit on the amount of vst's and effects you can use on each track, but it just means you have to bounce down your audio files a few extra times...no harm in that.

pro-tools, pro-tools, pro-tools, i get tired of hearing that name only reason people say it cause its the industry standard, but there are other programs out that also do the job, like cubase, and if your on mac logic. but really it comes down to the mic tho. But if you got some good vst's throw in the right compression and eq you can get it to sound good

The quality of the recording depends on these factors:
    - room
    - mic
    - mic preamp (maybe sound card)
    - AD conversion (sound card)

It really doesn't matter the software to get good results in the recording. Some softwares are better for editing audio, but that's very personal.

Anyway I'd recommend to forget about pro tools and get logic. There's an express version which is really nice and has lots of fx. Plus you're not tied to any hardware to use logic. Later you can always upgrade to logic studio which is a real powerhorse.
