You know in a club when they turn the main lights on at closing? Thats what your gig will be like without a decent light rig. They are ABSOLUTELY necessary.
Go to a small / medium sized club, look at the light & listen to the sound rig. Is it cheap and nasty? Sound bad? Look pathetic? You should be aiming to come as close as you can to a decent setup & beat a pathetic one.
These clubs cater for the same amount of people you are trying to cater for.
As bucky said, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
