I'm also going to suggest the VCI-300. It's everything you need, and when you're ready, you can step up to 1200's and a battle mixer. You CAN scratch on a VCI-300, I actually learned on that, despite having access to CDJ's and turntables for a long time before that... (Weird, I know)

Another setup I would highly recommend is a Numark V7 and X5 mixer. You can also learn how to scratch on this setup.

It has a decent enough crossfader, and high resolution jog wheel, which is what you need.

    Wanna battle?

Depends what you call scratching. A couple of transforms and flares here and there maybe. Badass hardcore scratch routines, not so much. The 300 probably has some of the best jogwheels around, but they're still jogwheels and not a big 12" slice of vinyl.

I'm no vinyl purist by any means, but scratching is different.

    Hang on whut?

You want to learn to scratch, but don't like the VCI-300, but DO like the BCD3000??? the jogwheels on that would be like scratching with jam jar lids. Don't get me wrong, it's fine for mixing, but for scratching it's a no go.

You know you don't have to go with a DVS system? Just thought that was worth saying. The more you practice the more you'll realise how much more is possible with controllers, and what a bullshit point of view vinyl purism is.

However, as I said if you definitely want to scratch then DVS is the way to go.

The BCD3000 is pretty basic as controlllers go. It's ok, but not great. I think you'd probably be better off getting a VCI-300 since it comes with software and a soundcard built in, or maybe an S4 if you can find the money because you can eventually get the scratch update for that.

Traktor is my favourite software but it's quite expensive since you have to get a controller and sound card as well, making the S4 a good deal. I suggest you have a good hard look at what your budget is and then make a decision about which direction you want to go.

I warn against buying a crappy controller and having to pay again for a better one 6 months down the line.

This is some of the best advice many new DJs never listen to.

Yes you can save a little money buying a less expensive controller, but you won't get all that back when you resell it, and you will, or it will collect dust on your bookshelf. *shrug* You're better off saving and investing. You want to really dig into software? Learn to make basic keyboard mappings and mix with it.

You want to use DVS? Go all out, dude. Make that your first investment. If you KNOW that's what you want to do, it's your safest, strongest bet. But recognize the cost and the massive pain in the ass turntables can be.

If you're going to go the controller route, don't skimp to learn. Two years from now you'll regret it, because then you'll have to buy something legit.
    It's the FAQ. Read it.
