I would think encoding MP3 on the fly would be a bit of an unessesary processor hog as well

As for recording .mp3 and then deciding you need to re-encode it for a different purpose - SI=(even smellier)SO
There are free mp3 encoders out there aren't there?. Audacity is 100% free and uses LAME, couldn't NI? And if you wanted to reencode it you wouldn't be using mp3 in the first place. You would lose nothing from having the option there.

LAME is on shaky legal ground and adopts a position that would not be tenable for NI.

Hindsight. That's what you'll wish you'd had when someone wants to put your once-in-a-lifetime live mashup mix on the radio but can't because you'd encoded at at 128kbps because you're a bit new at the computer thing and you didn't see the .MP3 switch in the preferences.

Or you used .MP3 because you didn't want to spend $0.07 per GB for a new hard drive. Or take 2 minutes encoding your .WAV into all the .MP3 and lossless containers under the sun after you'd spent weeks planning and prepping a mix, and 2 hours recording it.

Don't give people weapons of bass destruction and then encourage them to use it on themselves dude!

    More options is ALWAYS better.
But that's like giving someone a choice of driving away in the Aston Martin DB9 or the Peel P50....

Thought the same (but coming from a shoutcast broadcasting perspective - as the icecast option included in Traktor is shite) and came to the same perspective as Mr Pizzle points out ...
