Your subject is a very interesting one, Digital dj tips (or was it here?) featured a serie of articles about running an 'event'. Have you read it?
    There's also this one:

ps: I should present excuses too, my way of writing could be quite literal (straight?) sometimes. And I'm a mean cynical SOB hiding behind his computer so that makes things easy ^^.

Sometime the best thing you can do yourself is to take an opening slot and let some one else have the prime. Since you're the one doing all the work it should be no issue getting a gig further down the line, and this keeps everyone happy and hopefully they'll remember you in the future when they have something that comes up.

And this will be a good way to see who can cut it and who can't. Everyone wants to play the prime time slots, but if they can't handle it then there's no argument about it.

And it seems like you are the "leader" of this crew, so from now on maybe you should be making the schedule for the time slots so this doesn't happen in the future. Just be sure to juggle guys around. This helps them develop as DJ's as well since they're forced to think about playing and looking for tunes that fits the opening, warm up, prime time and closer slots.

And if some one can't carry their weight then maybe it's time to find another DJ or two to help fill out your roster.

No worries - let me know if you have any cavities that need looking at.

How long is the play time? Is it possible that you could do the entire show yourself? You would get more money, have more control over the music, and you wouldn't be carrying what sounds like a bunch of lazy people. I understand that they may be friends, but if they don't want to do any of the work to get the job, why give it to them?

+1... sort of. Even if you are the best fit for a prime slot, in my experience, promoters look really bad in the eyes of their patrons when they put themselves on in headline slots.

I'll agree with that with just one caveat. If it's a monthly or more then taking the main slot all the time is not recommended but if it's just every once in a while then there's nothing wrong with him headlining. I will say though that the OP should pay close attention to his crowd during all the sets and if they're really digging somebody else then let them headline a night or two. If you want to keep them coming in the door you have to program your night and not just your set.
