    anyone can use fx..
the performance aspect that ppl like Ean bring to the table is creatively using cue points, remixing on the fly, layering sounds, etc...

I know that controllerism is still in its rough stages.. can't wait to see what happens with it in the near future

Not wanting to shit on anyone with the balls to put themselves out there I'll say I enjoyed Edison's set (bonus points for laptop closure).

Wow... That was truly awful. I do feel a little bad about saying that, because I'm on the east coast and can't go to one of these, but I really feel like I could do 10x better on my worst night. These guys are obviously bedroom DJ's that are struggling to translate that into a live performance. From a technical aspect, it was very interesting though. I want to try some of those setups.

Lift your guy's heads up, STOP doing the twitchy Ean Golden hand thing (pretty sure that's copyright infringement), and look at what music and sounds move your crowd. That's what will take these performances from painfully awful, to an actual show.

uh...not that I really enjoyed any of these sets but a competition/battle is different than the club scene.

The battle is all about the DJ and his music, the club is about the dancer/listener and what they want to dance to.

I liked the kind of dubby sound that sabotage had going but otherwise the performances were nothing like the high-energy DMC battles I've seen. I didn't FEEL like these guys really wanted to beat each other. There was no sense of that. There was no swagger. I didn't feel like anyone was really talking through the decks about how they wanted to fuck up the other DJ's and shit down their throat. Honestly the best example I can show is this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhG8W...eature=related

Shiftee fucking KILLS it on the decks and his song choice talks smack, literally. His set is dynamic, it's fun, it's expressive, it is quintessential hip-hop; in your face not giving a fuck. I just don't get "battles" for any other genre. The entire point of a battle is that battles are supposed to be raw as fuck. It's supposed to be a fist-fight on the decks. Those videos felt more like a circle jerk than a fist fight.

And I love controllerism. The prepared sets are so cool, and for 2 minutes it's awesome. Ean Golden jamming with phenomenon on the S4 was what really got me going, but it's been people like DJ Craze and Shiftee that keep me going. I can't 1/100th do what any of them can but fuck, it makes me want to try.

I think what really gets lost in translation how the music corresponds to the setting. A battle is about swagger and wit. The club is about creating a nice flow with your mix so people can dance. These performances lack both. The constant stutters are jarring and hard to dance to or groove to. The odd song choices simply don't have any purpose within the "battle" context. You've taken club type music and then tried to throw it into a genre which is best suited for the style of hip-hop or higher tempo music (think of craze with Drum and Bass). I think that is the real problem with controllerism (at least at this battle). It aspires to be more than it is and it falls short at both.

I also apologize in advance if I offend anyone. I really don't mean to. I think the problem is, is that when you talk to a DJ who says controllers are great because you can do so much more than on CDJ's or turntables, I want SO MUCH for that to be true, but when you look at an experienced Turntablist their sets are just so much more impressive from both a technical and aural stand-point that one finds that particular vein of reasoning quite hollow.

I don't think you know what a battle is.
That being said I don't think controllerism fits into this type of setup. Most turntablism bores me to tears even though I can appreciate the difficulty and effort it took to put a routine together. I would also become suicidal if I had to listen to 20 dudes taking turns doing guitar solo's for an hour. I think the use of controllers can work well in a live show, unfortunately the show wouldn't be about you (the Dj).

edit: barg! motherfucker above me typed faster and said it better!
