If your S4 breaks, you'd want to bring a pair of huge turntables that weigh like 50 pounds?

First of all, the S4 should be fine as long as you take care of your equipment.

A soundcard, additional controller, and turntables cost you almost as much as an S4...
Conclusion? Buy another S4 if you really think something's gonna happen...

If you buy an s4 this month (NI has a deal on) then you get a scratch license free, including control vinyl. When you get the s4 you'll have the software outright, you wouldnt need to have it as an upgrade. I would suggest selling the tsp1 license once you have the s4 (traktor scratch pro 2) as you'll have no need for it.

    edit: beaten to the punch

Oh okay I got it now. Thanks!

You have two spots that you play at on the weekend where you have to bring you own stuff. Your the main DJ. All you have is the traktor s4. No turntables or anything else as backup to playout with. Native Instruments says it might take to 2 to 3 weeks to get your s4 back or more. Next week is your gigs-for saturday and sunday. Your S4 is gone, what would you do in that scenario?

Just curious... What is your DJ set-up when you gig out?

Laptop with xwax, audio 4 dj, vinyl, bunch of cables.

Also carry some CDs, both timecode and regular but I've never had a chance to use them. I don't know anyone with CDJs.

In the situation you described I would either use CDs or buy an audio 2 DJ, plug it into the clubs mixer and just use the keyboard shortcuts + the mixer to do whatever.

Okay, first of all, I understand where you're coming from with the soundcard. Personally, I plan to pick up an audio 6 or 10 and I currently have an S4 and X1. Why? Because 1) I may very well not have space for my S4 in a booth and 2) I'd rather use a proper mixer at the club instead of Traktor's internal, depending on how bad said mixer at said club is (lol). Then I can bring the card and my X1 (possibly 2 X1s) and use the decks at the club, taking up a hell of a lot less space than cramming the S4 in there. Flexibility and external mixing are the name of the game.

    Main set-up: CDJ + DJM + SSL

    back up's:
    CDJ's or USB stick
    Audio 2 + X1 + Traktor

With what Keep is describing - I would consider a DJM or Xone mixer with 2 X1's and an Audio 6/8/10 my main set up and the S4 would be my back up or portable one.

I wouldn't consider Turntables a "back up" if you play on turntables normally that's because you use turntables. If you just play and sync you can do that on a VCI-100. Not bad back up either for a low price.
    SSL - DJM 800 - Technic 1200's - X1 - ITCH - NS6 - VCI-300

    not hatin, yo!
yeah I only use my mixer when I play really... so when I've played out and no equipment is offered, its not a big deal.
