Are you asking when you should feel comfortable calling yourself a DJ?
Or at which point you need a moniker?

Maybe once you realize the first thing you do when you wake up is to go to any Dj Forum and see what's new, perhaps when you spent more than half your first salary in midi controllers, or when you know that just playing with your music is, sometimes, better than Family Guy or being drunk on a sidewalk.....

But if people that is not actually related to you likes what you are doing (your best friend will tell you anything nice just as you do) then you are a DJ. This is just to say that the "Dj" label, I think, has to be given by others.

I have this house party tomorrow, first time people doesn't know me will see me mixing... about 20 to 30.... I need a cigarrete.
Music is communication, as any other form of creation.
    SoundCloud
MBP 13", Traktor Pro, Presonus Firebox, Numark Stealth, Akai MPD-18, Behringer speakers.

    Fare nuff...

I've been performing at a bar 4 the past month and within 3 hours of my first set, the waitress said I was already better than the last DJ they fired. She reiterated it a couple more times, and convinced me to put "DJ" in front of my alias on the sign outside, and identifys me as such when I do karaoke upstairs in a separate lounge.

So when other people, you don't know start to call you a DJ, thats when you become one. Because, really, we the listeners define what a successfull DJ is by dancing and drinking. If they suck, we go elsewhere.

It not a title you can submit a resume for, you just earn it but acting like one.

Theres people out there playing itunes and calling theirself a dj :\

So even if you just mess around in Traktor once a year your still more worthy of calling yourself a dj than those guys !

I love your name Cayotic. Its awesome that its based on your real name ;D

Too bad I cant do that, my last name is terrible :[

I always have a hard time coming up with names. Took me ages to come up with Midian but unsure if I like or will keep it. Probably tho.

Best name I came up with was for Mike B Aka Kaon ;] . Its a quantum particle made up of subatomic 'strange' particles. How awesome is that. lol.

I personally think DJ has been overused and is now overrated.

Just last night, on a local radio station they broadcast from a local club... the "DJ" was only crossfading songs (already remixed - club mix style) and changing BPMs all the time, very annoying.. while cutting beats with cues from some other-genre song...

And honestly, it's much more original to have a "nickname/moniker" .. or your name if it's unique/rare

I dont like the use of 'DJ' pre the name first cos its so Cliche now and also because were not reeeeeally 'disk jockeys' anymore.

I rekon just the name sounds cooler as well, and the fact that if you have DJ in front of your name it kinda limits/constrains you in the sense that your not a producer n shit.
