I know what he means. That if you wanted to use Serato (SSL actually) you needed more than just laptop. Sure the Rane Soundcard was it, but you also needed turntables and a mixer, so it was a investment. With VDJ and Traktor you could use a 99.00 controller and even split the output out of your laptop and call yourself a DJ. There was a legitimacy to using SSL with real gear (even if you are a shit DJ). The investment weeds out many of the wanna-be's.

I think it's a good marketing move for them, and the software actually looks pretty cool....but I hear what he's getting at.

Probably because they're loosing more and more market each year? Just saying.

Now NI VS Serato battle will be interesting in the next months/year

The NI vs Serato vs Pioneer battle will be even more interesting. Numark might own the low-end but the profit margins there are thin so few other companies want to operate there.

let me correct this before it gets out of hand... specially because i use traktor now...

When i first got ssl it was a feeling of accomplishment, it was an investment, not just something you walk into the store to buy... you watched videos, you did your homework... there was a sense of shock and awe... and you saved (maybe for a check or 2) then finally purchased it...

it was also exclusive in the sense that it couldnt be bootlegged... there was no bullshitting whether or not you were using serato.

Now with intro-dj anyone can just say they are spinning on serato. Hell, if i wanted to i could just buy 2-3 mixtrack pros and give them away without it hurting my pocket... without so much of an inconvenience...

while this is the idea... i work at a dj gear store and i can tell you first hand its not always the reality.. if i had a dollar for everytime this happend i would have a damn good meal off the dollar menu but not much more.

Same. Maybe wasn't the best wording but I know what you mean. Kinda sucks but its such an easy market for them to capitalize on with those entry-level controllers being so common that I can't blame them for picking up on the opportunity.

New blog post says the new Pioneer controller will cost more than the S2... What a joke.
