im not trying to prove anything man, but your outlook is just so ten years ago. adapt with the time, and if a better use of his money is to get a controller (which it is) then he should. even you are an example of moving with the times. if a set of tech12s were still THE way to go, would you be on cdjs now?

Dont get anything too pricy if you're starting as a hobby . I just started out with a MF and a Numark total control I bought on Ebay for 70 bucks. I've been using the two for about 3 months now and I DJ'd for a Halloween party and now I'm ready to move up from the Numark. But get a lower tier controller and you could spoil yourself with a MF if you want. But just get used to the basics and blending and such before you advance to the fancy equipment. Hope that helps!
as everyone else has said the best thing to do is be cheap with your equipment at first, I started off with a numark total control and one of those $2 sound cards off amazon and some cheap $20 sony over the ear headphones I had...then once I got more comfortable with it and really started liking it i went ahead and got a vci 100 se and an audio 2 with some nice headphones...make sure you do your research before you jump into djing because its an expensive hobby..and I recommendd getting the free edition of virtualDj just to get a feel for it and mess around with it, make/record some mixes and if you like it or feel like upgrading then buy the software that you would prefer and a cheap controller
deffinately the better option over the s2, gives you so much more flexablity and room to grow (plus dedicated filters!!!!) -- 4 decks/timecode + you can still sell it used for a pretty chunk of change if you change your mind (not as much as selling cdjs/tts, but still, its not like the controller isnt in demand/popular, so youd prob get decent resale value)
plus an s4/mf go great together (mf for effects, as imo, the FX layout on the s4/s2 suck)-- its my setup and i love it
but that being said, what works for me, may not work for you. do your research, grow into your equipment, and think before you buy new gear that you may realize you dont need (has happened to me -- as well as countless others on here -- before)

If you are in the US, black Friday is almost there, great time to pick up a controller.
I think you better of with a s4 or s2, already enough second hand s4's on the market but with your budget you probably can get a s4 already. 12% of already with musicians friend for veterans day. Probably more on black friday.
ebay 760
And if you don't like the hobby, I think you can sell these puppies for a better price then most controllers.
