Fry's has vinyl? That's awesome! I was just there spending way too much money on a hard drive; wish I'd known ... then again I would probably have spent way too long there if I did know about it.

Anything computer related, Tv's, car audio,cd's, porn... Now vinyl? Who runs this place?

No stores around me! I depend on the internet for 100% of my dj stuff. Thats why I rely on friends to try stuff first before buy! Although I was the first to have a VCI-100 and later a S4. The few spots that sell dj stuff is too expensive with crap brands and a very small selection. Congrats to all the peeps here that can go to a real dj store and talk about tips and music and what not right there. If I could open a dj store around me with the scene beign not that bad, it would be awesome!

Guitar Centers are everywhere too and I dig them for their price matching policies (find a good price on the internet and if it's a valid price they will match it) and their liberal return and exchange policies. The staff is hit or miss; some people know what they're talking about and a lot have no clue

Very true. Don't be afraid to ask if there's actually a DJ on hand who knows what he's talking about. Don't let a random keyboard guy or guitar player sell you your DJ gear.

I live in Chicago we have lots of stores for gear Guitar Center, Sam Ash, 1,2,3 DJ, Midwest stereo, Audio Lines, etc. But what we don't have much of is record shops most have closed down which is sad because there were real good shops that sold vinyl, but also gear. My wife used to own Hot Jams with her now ex husband Andre Lopez. You used to be able to go there shop, get your gear fixed or modded out (reverse switches leds etc), hang out, listen to the latest cuts, and network and meet huge headline DJ's and promoters, & get the latest party flyers. The nice thing about record stores was the would go through all the music and get rid of the all junk before you. Now I go shopping online and listen to a couple of hundred tracks and find just a hand full I like. anyone else miss the vibe of the record stores.

Fuck yes, though I'm lucky enough to have a few great ones still around nearby. I hit Amoeba up at least once a month and there's about a dozen other places in easy driving distance and they're all good in their own ways, a couple of them beyond amazing. Though it's mostly not super cheap - stuff is picked over frequently enough and store owners mostly know what they have so you have to pay for it. And some places are just stupid with the prices but I guess there's a market for that too ... I can't fathom paying $150+ for a single album but apparently a lot of people can.

I adore record stores - it's something I try to check out in every city I visit. I actually lived near chicago (over 25 years ago now) and there were some great record stores back in the day.
