I was worried about the removable cable on the UM2's tbh, I wasnt sure if it would make them more or less reliable in general, but I'm glad to say that the connection is really stiff and that it's very unlikely to just jump out unintentionally, I read the reviews on westones for ages and having read them the only other I'd have considered was the UM3x which seems to have a very strong following especially given the relatively low price point compared to the headphones it seems to compete with. I think the blog on DJTT even echo'd this!

To the OP, I'm also interested in how you find IEM's for DJing and how you use them?

I almost feel its like trusting what you hear through them, since you can just throw full size ones on and off without a second thought, but I'd rather not with IEMs. When I first used them I was always taking the one I had in (I only use one at a time to monitor), out to see if the mix was working on the speakers.

I'm gradually finding that I can trust them more and utilise the monitor mix knob more (I've actually got three buttons midi mapped for this main/mix/monitor that change automatically when tracks are loaded to decks or when the browse screen is expanded for the preview player, which makes it a lot more fluent). Can't see me going back to over ears but just interested what your thoughts were?

Sorry for the trollish post, but they both do have detachable cables. Just don't want to confuse the OP
No problem. You're right. The ultimateears ones don't say it well on their website, and the UM2 do not have removable cables. The UM2RC do. They charge $20 more for that feature.

Love it. Absolutely love it. You don't have to worry about the monitor setup anywhere you play, you don't have to deal with any kind of imaging or reflection problems, you get a similar sound everywhere (which is a double edged sword…if they haven't done something to shoot the room, you might not hear problems that you could fix with EQ), you don't expose yourself to insanely loud volumes, etc..

As long as the mixer has a cue/master blend for the headphone signal, I'll probably never use big DJ headphones again.

I just got my UM2'sin the mail today. Perviously I have the M-Audio IE-20 XB's. I loved them. They were made by Ultimate Ear for M-Audio. Since then they have been discontinued. Unfortunately when I was DJ'ing at Ultra Music Festival I was doing areunion with my former music partner. He cranked up the headphones without me knowing when I didn't have them in and they sadly became blown... I am however excited to try out my new headphones. My IE-20 XB's had a detachable cable, and so do my new UM2's. I know the UM2's come is 2 versions, te UM@ and the UM2-RC. The RC obviously is the one with the removable cable, I would never buy the one withot the removable cable option, so make sure you get the ones with that option!

Ended up getting the Shure 425SE, with removable cables - worn 'em in nicely now - lovely sound, jut a question of finding the right tips for them - not found the 'Goldilocks' solution yet.

I do find DJing in the a little odd, as I feel quite 'removed' from the crowd.

    Cheers Lance!

This is my problem with them as well. I have Shures (E2 or something; bought them years ago and they are long out of production); the sound is great and I love using them on planes and stuff, but for DJing I haven't been able to get into it. Granted I've only tried them a couple times in clubs, but I feel you can't connect with people around you without pulling them out, and then I'm constantly pulling them in and out. Even people I'm not talking to, I feel distanced with the plugs, and forget about trying to hear a request or order a drink. If I'm alone in a booth all night it would probably be fine, but that doesn't sound like a lot of fun ultimately. I suppose if I was a superstar playing for 10,000 people in a loud stadium I'd feel differently though.

I am going to get mine remolded I think from 1964Ears. Basically you just send in your generic fit IEMs and they custom mold them for your ears for around $200 USD. Not bad, I think your shipping will be a bit more though, but still its rather inexpensive for custom molded IEMs I think!

As for feeling removed from the crowd, I have gotten totally used to DJing with IEMs for the last 4 years. I just go with my gut that what I am doing is keeping the crowd moving.
