I'm in the exact same boat...when I go to a bar/club and see youngsters on the decks I immediately expect them to prove themselves. I don't always call them out, but I go to the booth, look at the setup, drop a few bits of knowledge, and wish them luck.

If I see an older DJ I don't even think twice. I know this guy has been around the block.

OP - I'm a big fan of the "go for it" mentality. Don't think too hard about it. Go do it. Anyway, 40 is the new 30. You're not a grandpa.

OP - thanks for starting this thread! I am 45 and just starting into EDM/Producing/DJing, and have the same thought often - WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING AT MY AGE! LOL..

But, I have dabbled in music at many times in my life, love it, feel it, and think I can do somethign with it. So I am following the GO FOR IT mentality too. Will I ever "go pro"? Will I make a living (or even a buck?) at it? Dont know, actually dont care - just want to do something enjoyable - sounds like you are enjoying it, so do it!

Besides, those of us with some years on have something to offer the young pups.. years of listening and a view over a much broader span of sounds and experiences to "color" what we do.

I don't think I can add any more than what has been said on this thread, other than I'm 40 in a few weeks time and still harbour dreams of playing out.

I did a fair bit when I was 30 odd years old, but now I don't get the time to practise. I still have my gear and I still want to move a crowd, but having kids makes things so much more difficult. If you have the time and the inclination, then do what you feel is right. Don't let anyone on here or any other site tell you this is or isn't the right thing for you to do. The fact is that you have already signed up for this place and have started posting, so that should be the kind of answer you are looking for.

    Good luck.

Don't let the bastards grind you down.
