In my opinion the term "sellout" tends to me far more subjective and much less objective.

I dont know that there is any particular way to define "sell out" other than ...

lets say with hiphop for instance ...

if you're preaching underground ethos all day long and then within an album or two you're suddenly making "radio friendly" music where as before you were making the opposite - I would consider that being a "sell out".

HOWEVER - on the other side of the coin , i'm sure plenty of those artists would argue something like "its better to get paid and laid than fight for the underground" , "I dont have anything to prove to anyone , I was in the scene way back before blah blah blah , i've been there and done that" , ect ...

    Here's your choices:

    A) Play what you want to play and hope you get paid for it.

    B) Play what the jobs are calling for, and get fo-real paid for it.

    C) Make it to a level where you play what you want and get paid well for it.

Sign me up to "Sell Out"!
Then you do it for the $$....and not the passion of playing or being a musician.

At least you honest about it!

Passion only gets you so far.

    $ pays the bills.

    That's why I work a day job.

    Thats me exactly...day job.....and why i don't call myself a pro.

Although i get paid pretty well for it.....i suppose it COULD be my dayjob.....but as mentioned....I play what I want....and get paid for it and am lucky ppl dig it.

Else i would be screwed for gigs!

I have this argument a lot. Playing for the crowd or playing for yourself.

Up to how you wanna work it I guess.

Also, the ones calling you a sellout.....are they buying you food and paying your rent?

    No....so who cares about em?

If they were supporting me.....I would need to listen......if not.....fuck em!
