To which I reply; you don't tell Eric Clapton to bring a kazoo with him as a back-up in case all his guitars suddenly break.

He uses loops mostly, one bar from one track, four from another and so on.

The way I understand it Cassy Britton filled in for him and he ended up doing a set the next day. Still with his history of using technology I'm kind of surprised this happened to him.

I agree with others who say he should have just had an SD card and played some tracks the regular way. Most people wouldn't notice or care. In fact I'd be more interested in seeing that as it'd be something different.

If my photography gear failed at work one night, the customers wouldn't notice or care if I just went around using my phone instead, doesn't mean I should do it. I won't put my name to work of a poor quality, same with Richie Hawtin.

Think missed my point. Most hobby djs are more prepared for a sketchy happening then big name djs. Point is what is something this site preaches the most. Being a digital Dj means you have to be well prepared for faulty technology.

I am inclined to agree with this.
There is only a certain amount planning for this kind of situation an artist like Hawtin can do. It's not fair to expect this kind of performance be ready for any eventuality. I'm sure if one of his X1's went down he would carry on or if one of his HDD's went down he would have a backup.
Seems like the worst of all situations happened and he had to cancel.

If Usain Bolt twisted his ankle he wouldn't think "oh well, i'll just hop. I have to do something for the crowd"

They didn't go to see a guy with 2 turntables. They went to see a guy using a shed load of tech that, for the first time I know of had a major malfunction. He planned the set meticulously, why would he have an SD card backup.

    That's like saying to NASA:
"so what if the space shuttle has a fault. You can still go up, Saturn 5 is available. You gotta do something for the crowd"

Exactly. See, this is the problem in the DJ community at the moment... people seem to think that CDJ2000s are the pinnacle of DJing technology and there's nothing you can't do on them, but the reality is that certain artists performances FAR exceed the capabilities and limitations of CDJs. The quicker people start realising this, the better tbh.
