400s are better for laptop DJing (HID control), and 350s are better for non-laptop (Rekordbox).
Neither are that great but either should do fine for practice at home.

I paid total out of pocket:
CDJ 850-K's - $425 each (slightly used, but looks brand new)
DJM-850-K - $1005 (brand new)
I jus wanted to feel cool too.
If what your going for is to get a club feel of djing for experience with CDJ's stear clear of the CDJ models under 800. CDJ 800 mk2, Cdj 1000 mk3, CDJ 850k, CDJ 900 are what you should be looking at for practicing. You should be able to grab a pair of 800s or 1000s fairly reasonable but you have to be patient haha, what i did was message everyone with listings on gumtree and asked them would they sell 1 CDJ or just the mixer. Most will say no but you will find one or two who will say yes and you will be able to grab 1 cdj a lot cheaper than buying a pair. Then you wait a while longer, message the same people who have 1 cdj left and they will realise they cant sell a cdj by itself so they will settle for a cheaper price. Thats my tip haha
lol good tip! but I'm not a fan of the 800 and 1000 models. No USB input. It's more for traktor users, in my opinion. I'd like CDJ 850s though. I do agree for a club feel I should go with 800 and up, but I'll be honest, that extra $1000 that ill need to spend for those, I'd rather not... I'm a student, I pay my own tuition, I have to pay my phone bill (canada, highest rates in the world), pay my car and for gas, and I can only work 2-3 times a week max because of school. My goal is to get these for now and upgrade next year. So, am I getting ripped off? If I can find CDJ 850s and DJM 850 at the same price, that'd be perfect lol I'd be open minded and spend a bit more, but not over $1500. The best deal for a CDJ 850 was $650, decent price, but still expensive with no mixer.

If i was you i would go for a pair of CDJ 850-k and a djm-800. 850-k are about $800 new here and 800 are discontinued but better than the 700 which they still sell. If you look around on your local second hand sales sites you may get lucky and score a good deal. Unfortunately however 850s and 900s dont seem to popular on the used market, no one seems to sell them.
I didn't end up buying the 350 set. I'll wait 'til I find a good set of 850s.

If your just starting out, buy a pair of bloody CD decks!
what happens when you have a nice lovely set made up on your USBs, you turn up to the gig and its 1000mk3's or something (which are still in a HELL of a lot of clubs),
buy CD decks, burn your CDs, save your money, stop being lazy by sticking everything on USB and rekordboxing it untill your good enough to demand a rider with 900/2000s on it.
DJM800 | 2xCDJ2000 | RMX1000 | Adidas HD25's
2011 MBP | Traktor 2.6 | Kontrol S4 | Scratch Live | SL2
Mac Pro | Ableton | Access Virus C | Maschine

I am looking to get used to CDJ's, but I don't see much advantage if buying 1000's over 350's. for home practice, you can get used to burning CD's and also be proofed for the future to use rekordbox. Should hold their value better as well if you buy 2nd hand.
