I know vinyl is making a resurgence but unless you say to yourself " Hey I wanna pretend I'm a DJ thats just starting in 1991 and collect records and play on turntables, there is no reason to invest in turntables, cartridges, mixer, and records that will be hard to find if you are just starting. Get a cheap controller and software and see if you even like DJing to start. It doesn't matter what tools you use, its how use them and the love of the music. I started on turntables because I had to, I manually beat matched because I had to. Don't get caught up in the "real DJs use turntables, real DJs don't hit the sync button" its all nonsense. Make use of the technology at your fingertips because in the end its what comes out of the speakers that counts.

there are a lot of kick ass songs that are only pressed on wax though, which is why i got a turn table.

plus, my street cred went up a few points.

I totally understand the desire to play on and use vinyl. It is simplistic and a great place to start in terms of mastering the basics (beat matching, cue point placement, and learning how to properly phrase). If the format you play your music through is that important, then go for it! I started on vinyl and definitely don't regret it. However when I started DJing 16 years ago, there were not many other options. Keep in mind that if you're not into turntablism, all your beatmatching should be done by limiting the amount of times your touching the record or the platter once you've cued and started the track anyways. With that in mind, could you bide your time by learning beatmatching on a controller's pitch-fader until you've accrued enough for a proper vinyl setup? Watch the pros on vinyl and they do almost all their beatmatching with the pitch fader alone. This can be replicated on controllers of many different price ranges. Good luck and welcome to the community.

    Default Beginner Controllers

I researched hard and long a year ago when i started and I found that the best beginner controllers in were "Numark Mixtrack Pro 2" and the "Pioneer DDJ-SB". I chose the numark just because that is what I found available on soundcloud for under $150. It was more than worth it for me and I learned all the basics on it, I love it. I even still use it now at the local club in my college town. There is a new version out now called the "Numark mixtrack pro 3" that you might want to check out.

I am kinda new to Djing like yourself. However, I owed an all in one Traktor S2 controller and sold it because I felt that it was limited(Didn't like to only press buttons and the small platter) and didn't want to rush learning to Dj as this will be a hobby for me. I now own a pair or open Box Reloop rp7000 turntables($300 each), used Traktor z2 mixer($250), New pair of Traktor time Code($12 each) and New pair of Concord blue($119 each). I did not buy all the equipment together, in fact all was brought about 6 months apart. I knew what i wanted and just would search craigslist, ebay and amazon for deals.

I like the turntables already for the simple fact that I can play old reggae studio one records that I would never be able to do with a controller. Everything is in my control.

Good luck and hope you enjoy because I am starting a new journey like you.

    All the best

I just started a Thread look out for it.
