to some extent I agree with both of you. It just frustrates me slightly that everywhere I go there will be impostors, men who qualify themselves above their ability. I'm not easily impressed, because I feel that I could do a lot of things, but I won't say that I can do something I can't or give an impression that is false.

Man, I cant hate on the dj's that are all hype, cuz they get all the gigs. They might suck at mixing, but people follow them where ever they play...promoters and club owners pay top dollar for thoses hype dj's!
All I can say is pay your dues and keep on practicing!
i think whenever we start letting our egos get the best of us, like in this exact situation where OP is hating on another dj because he thinks he's better but isn't getting the credit he thinks he deserves..
repeat what livefaststephen just said. and repeat it until it sinks in.
"EVERYONE CAN DJ"
so maybe it's time to accept that the competition consists of mostly douche bags who stand in front of the mirror longer than they stand behind the decks - and find a way to USE THIS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!! come on, this is a good thing - you've got a leg up on your competition, how can you not love that!?![]()

I'm not hating on him because I can't get any credit (which is kinda rude to imply) but as I outlined that I don't like the fact that people want to talk and hype themselves up, thus ruining my credibility when I say I am a dj. Everywhere I go someone/everyone is a dj, but the proportion of those people who can really throw down is really low. I raced bicycles for a long time and know a thing or two about their mechanics, but I never have called myself a bike mechanic, and it annoys me (although i am definitely letting it go, I hope) that people want to use iTunes and to play around mixing once or twice with a xfader and they are a dj.
Ed. I hope that you guys understand that I am actually speaking with a positive and not moody tone, and that I hoped more for some humorous stories rather than life coaching. Some advice might be in line, but when it goes to 3 pages of people kinda repeating it seems like a waste

I'd buy you a drink just for saying that.
My general mentality is never to talk or bring up being a DJ because I feel it's such a cliche these days. Everyone and their mother owns turntables, or some cheap controller and pushes the sync button. Or worse - BitTorrents a copy of Ableton, warps, and "DJs" on autopilot. What I do take pride in is producing music and casually handing out demo's (if requested from me), if not for listening, then for feedback. I take more pride is cultivating my own creations rather than playing someone elses
Overall, I understand where you are coming from. Do I let those people bug me?, nah. This industry is all about networking, and it pays to have a good attitude, and a good business mentality. I landed my position with a radio station from a guy waaay back in high school who was a candy assed raver with a chip on his shoulder, and jumped aboard the DJ bandwagon. Still buddies with him, and he turned out to be a great guy![]()

Sorry that you didn't get the response you were hoping for... however, I think if you reread your post you'll see why.
Your complaints are:
1) didn't like the guy in high school because of the image he portrayed/way he acted
2) thinks this aspiring dj's posting of uncompressed audio indicates he is a newb
3) his use of low cost equipment automatically means he is less committed and in it for the wrong reasons
You haven't given us anything to work with here. What else about this situation prompted you to make your post? Did you actually download and listen to his mix? Was his track selection and mixing horrible? Is he bragging around town that he is god's gift to music lovers? What about this situation, other than the superficial info you gave us, makes you dislike that this person is trying his hand at a craft you seem to get a good deal of self worth from? Everybody has to start somewhere, right? If there is more going on here that you haven't shared, and might enlighten us to why this guy dj'ing bothers you so, please share.
As others have mentioned, and I'm sure you are sick of hearing, anyone can dj or produce music with the widespread proliferation of music technology and equipment. That just means you have to work harder to differentiate yourself from those that get into dj'ing to hopefully look cool. We are long past the days of having to spend all your money to buy the gear, and combing record shops for the best and exclusive tracks. That's the nature of progression, and trying to fight it is a losing battle. Better to focus your energy on what you can control.
