I think Serato just wants to control their product and there is really nothing wrong with that. Keep in mind they had 14-bit MIDI controllers and much more advanced HID stuff before NI had it hooked to Traktor, and NI still doesn't have adequate 14-bit support... though there really aren't any controllers that do either.
However, Traktor has a more user friendly system, that while it can cause more problems, and you have to worry about compatibility a bit more, it can be used by more people for more things (in my opinion).
