Hawting was using Ableton for quite some time also. Cox was a 4 turntablist way back, then went to 4 cdjs, then to Traktor timecoded CDs, now he is using a controller. Luciano was using timecode vinyl, and Loco Dice over the summer in Ibiza was on timecode CDs... And Wink is a Traktor user as well...

So to say all the old heads are using CDJs is incorrect. Cox is nearly 50, Dubfire and Hawtin are in their 40s... John Acquaviva is also a Traktor user and he is in his late 40s also... All of these names are well known and have been around forever. I know of plenty of other "BIG" DJs using laptops and such...

One thing i will note her eis that you will not find any of the names above on a PC. All are avid Mac users. That is one thing about having a serure and reliable system that they are sure will not crash...
    Agreed.

I think its, as people have been saying in this thread, the fact that its just a product of what they learned on. The fact that they have progressed and embraced the 21st century is a testament to where things are heading. I can't imagine CDJ's are going to stick around and be the standard when the technology available is just so much better. Yes, they may be still widely in use today but i wouldn't expect that to last too much longer. Tracktor and Abelton are going to be the standard soon enough.

Re: Mac's, the first comp i ever got was a Mac LCII in like 1993. It outlasted 3 or 4 PC's and the only reason it had to be thrown out was because the on/off button got so worn down it broke off :P So yeah Mac's are uber stable.

I believe your answering all of your own questions. Your talking about big name acts. Do you think tiesto carries anything other then an emty ball sack from all the (im pressuming) women he bones..... actually, he proberly has someone to lightly cup his nuts to take the weight of if he is feeling that there a little heavy. Maybe David Gueata and Tiesto cup each others nuts... why persue an understanding of why they do it, when its so obvious because again it would all be down to personal prefrence and its what they are used to:eek:

CDJs do have their advantages, you know. First thing is: They're everywhere. You don't have to put them in your huge gear backpack with a set of spare cables and all the other stuff that laptop/controller/timecode DJs like us need. For us that may be okay, for others that seems impractical, especially for DJs that travel a lot cross country or even internationally, just to play their two hour sets. With CDJs, there's no need for a soundcheck. Believe it or not, on a good soundsystem, the difference between CDJ, Vinyl and Laptop are audible, and you have to take care of that. When everyone uses CDJs, you don't need to to that.
I have been talking to a few british DnB guys lately, and some of them, although they use vinyl or timecode systems at home or in their residencies (if they have one), they bring CDs when they travel, because it still is the safest bet as far as reliability and sound quality is concerned. Others are still very biased against Midi, BTW.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Otus, and I take it everywhere I can. But I also bring my wallet of emergency CDs in case something goes wrong. Although it never happened so far.

i agree with haze324 that it is quite genre based as to what people use, ie serato=hiphop house=cdj and tech=traktor

but also some of these touring big names probably dont have a lot of 'downtime' during the year to learn new control surfaces program mappings etc... but im sure if they were serious about the transition they would find the time. if coxy can, anyone can :-)

that's a common generalization that i read but don't really see that being the way it is, at least around here.

around here if someone is using a DVS it's highly likely they are using SSL, regardless of the genre they are playing.
We don't believe in the star system. We want the focus to be on the music. If we have to create an image, it must be an artificial image. That combination hides our physicality and also shows our view of the star system. It is not a compromise-daftpunk

It's simple, a pioneer CDJ never stops playing whatever you do and a laptop can stop working for no reason and very easily, I use a laptop but that's how things are at the moment, computers are not as reliable as decks for live performance.

And I've definitely put CDs into CDJs and have them get spit back out.

Or not spit the CD back out.

    Or have them skip.

And these are on discs that have worked on every other deck I have ever put them in
