My opinion, stop drawing lines in the sand. If it's good and the crowd is digging it, then all is well.

I find genres useful when talking to people about a song they don't know. It's a relative comparison tool, end of story.

Play your music that they will enjoy.

    Just my 2 cents.

Since restarting even though I love Deep House, I much prefer to mix Tech House and i am starting a collection of Techno, my next mix is deep admittedly but the one after that is going to be Techno, i just feel there is more ways to mix and do things with tech and techno than deep, maybe that's just me

play what you feel more comfortable with and what the crowd really enjoys imho

People say that I'm crazy to want to play psytrance at Brazil and think that i will earn some money, but that's the genre that I love since 2003 and I will at least try it

Here the TOP DJ's (as they say) play mainly Techhouse and Electrohouse.

If you love it chances are that someone else will to. The hard part is finding all those people and getting them all in the same spot as you at the same time

It's already been said but honestly, Play what you love. There's room for all kinds of "genre's" in your collection. Also you should find ways to smoothly(or abruptly if that's your pref) transition from one to the other. I've played a lot of long sets in my life, some 10 or more hours, and just playing 1 or 2 genre's=ultra boring for both you and the crowd.

Who djs a single genre anyways, I move between a lot of different stuff, although I will admit that you might be a bit tasked to go between trance and tech house, (progressive is the bridge imo). But who says you only have to play one genre at a time, I mix it up depending on how I feel on a given night.

    Default first post…woo

So, I started spinning a while ago, and I did exclusively trance. After a while, I got bored with it. It happened about the same time (really, a bit after) almost every track was the same…at least, the same within each of a few groups of producers.

Having done a lot of experiments…it's fully possible to weave tech house, techno, trance, prog house, prog trance, etc.…even electro and breaks…into a cogent set. It's also a lot of fun, it just takes a while.

The genre distinctions are pretty picky, especially when you start listening to some of the classic trance/rave that had just come out of acid house (we're talking age of love, cafe del mar…even sandstorm and kernkraft 4000 illustrate the point to some extent). Some of the best trance I've heard lately is in Beatport's techno and prog house sections.

It's kind of insane how much things have gotten stratified.

The important difference is how the tracks make you feel and to a lesser extent how well they mix with each other. Do you like that epic trance repeated tension & release thing, or do you prefer the older, darker, more brooding and introspective stuff that you can groove to for hours or days on end?

AFAI can tell, "trance" is split into just 2 genres…epic and progressive. The problem is that examples of both are also called breaks, prog house, tech house, house, techno, balearic house, prog trance…

Also, whoever posted the video of gareth emery…I'm not a fan of the video, but he's an amazing DJ and a great guy (met him at Ultra). His set at Ultra was awesome, and he co-wrote one of the best epic trance songs I've ever heard…I've bought it on vinyl and digital, and it stays in my crate today.

Oh yeah, and the video of pop music all being the same 4 chords…BS. I can actually play some of those on guitar, and they're not all the same chord progression. Some of them were the I IV V chord progression a lot of things are, some were I IV V V-suspended, a couple I IV V ii, and at least two were variations or rip-offs of pachabel's cannon (I V iv iii IV I IV V). Out of those, the I IV V is by far the most prevalent, making up 90% of blues.
