do you/anyone know to install traktor with the database on the external drive? is this recommended?

You need to set the root folder to the external drive, but it isn't really recommended.

If I were using an external drive I would just plug in my backup drive that I had so painstakingly mirrored to my other drive. That said, I would never use an external as my main source.
