gotta be selective about what events you choose to go to if you expect a certain type of show.

go to an event where the performer is known for their live shit as well or instead of their studio shit and you'll get what you pay for. do your research, there's still tons of guys who put their soul into the live performance.

if i'm paying an entry fee at the door, that dj better be doing some god damn work.
I feel the OP on this one. In a day and age where we have so much at our fingertips to really get expressive and push the limits like never before, there are way too many "dj's" doing even less than what was being done 10 years ago.

    -1 for lazy dj's.

    To each their own...

me? The DJ better be playing some good music... mixing has to be spot on, but I don't care if it's a set he pre-recorded or what...

As long as the women are hot and the mix at the bar is just right.. the vibe will come through.

9 times out of 10, it's all about the programming for me... the clubs I go to have secluded DJ booths, so you can't get in there anyway... besides, I'm not a member of the DJ POLICE... I'm there to have a good time... not enforce some DJ Heritage law.

If I go to a Louie Vega Dance Ritual party, I'll leave it up to him to decide how to vibe the night... pre-recorded, lazy, live, whatever... I just better have a good time (although I better not hear a Defected In The House compilation... but that could be fine too depending on the mood)

I've been guilty of pre-mixing 2 tracks and saving the MP3... that one MP3 gives me a chance to go to the restroom and then get a drink at the bar.

oooooh... sorry I wasn't "working". As much as I love DJing, standing from 9pm to 4am tends to make you tired.

if you're using cdjs which can read discs that have 100s of mp3s on them, why would a DJ change the cd every song? Especially if you're someone like Tiesto, etc who would be smart enough to put all the songs he's gonna use on two discs, one for each player. If you're using DVS even more of a reason not to need to change discs.

Also, with visual aids, beatmatching shouldn't take longer than 15-20 seconds...I don't think because a DJ isn't wearing his headphones often doesn't mean they don't mix. I don't wear my headphones except for when I cue up a new song, or do a quick beatmatch, apart from that I hate having headphones on, but I still mix my stuff when I spin in clubs, regardless of if someone does sync or automatically beatmatch a song on the computer, you still need skill to phrase the songs, and transition them in a good way.

it's a different story if the time saved using sync, isn't used to ultimately create something better, but instead used just for dancing and looking pretty. In this scenario I agree with you.

Listen, DJing is an art. Not something that can be twisted into whatever you want it be. The fact is this art was recently invented. Learn the history, do the research, and learn the mixing. It's like learning to walk. You don't just get up and run. It's a slow process that you develop the more MIX with other DJs and do networking. Go to a few of the local musician shows in you city. For them to be able to perform their craft at the highest level subconsciously shows that their a true master of their work. If you want to encompass all parts of DJing, mixing is one of the criteria to help you get on your feet. Do you want to be associated with a club that has a bunch of DJs who blast Top 40 music or do you want to DJ outside at mega electronic dance music festivals or clubs who are known to push the limits of music. Build your name, keep practicing, don't forget to look at the crowd, and have fun. But, there is simply too much tools we can use as DJs to do our homework. Just think , the early DJs did not have all the access to books, media, and social networks that we do. Put it all together, and who knows. But, yes mixing is a criteria if that's how YOU want to be perceived in the DJing world. Communicate with your peers and local DJs who have more experience. If you do not feel that those DJs represent your style or take, then go to a market that will.

Tiesto was better when I saw him for $15 in Toronto. Good times for sure!!

You should of filmed tiesto faking it and complained. if you go about it in the right way u will get ur money back.

shiftee and craze superbowl half time was live.

There are arguments for ableton sets, however it can make people very lazy.

Lazy DJ's are not a new thing. some djs used to have casset decks to play recorded mixes off bit more difficult to change ova.

can tiesto mix or has he just marketed himself very well

Really? Are you actually asking that question? Whether or not he's lazy sometimes (I don't know), surely no one's actually going to come out and say tiesto can't mix?!
