You'll go far kid!!My biggest influences are what I listened to growing up. I really never listened to music on my own until I got my laptop in 8th grade, soon after I started mixing, but I was raised with Funk, Soul, R&B, Oldies, whatever you want to call it. My Mom is a huge fan of all of these genres, so I grew up with them in the car. Shout out to 98.1 and 102.9 2 bay area R&B and Oldies stations that I still love. I'm only 17, so my ideas of oldies still include artists from the 80s and early 90s.
More Soulful:
Earth Wind and Fire
Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder - (Big Fan. Amazing Story, Amazing Music)
India.Arie - (Huge Fan for Life. I met her when I was 8 because she came to the radio station my Mom worked at and wow. She is phenomenal.)
Prince - (The Guy's a fkn Genius)
Bobby McFerrin - (Also met him, but when I was 7. I still have the picture on my wall.)
Jill Scott - (Been listening to her for as long as I can remember. First memory is going to Toys R Us with one of the interludes in one of her Albums playing where the discussion was between a college professor and his students about what love is. Beautiful artist, beautiful music)
Luther Vandross - (My best music memory. There was a girl who went to my preschool that I had the fattest crush on. I was always really shy, but I had these moments of boldness. I was really advanced in Pre School [Fractions and such. I also began reading at 2 - the first legit word I can remember reading was Octopus.] so I copied all of the words to Luther's - Can I Take You Out Tonight and sang it to her during Show and Tell. She kissed me on the cheek during recess. I was really pumped.)
Random Classical Pieces - (My dad works at the San Francisco symphony at Davies Hall and we always get free tickets to great shows. I got to see Queen Latifah perform her Jazz Album live completely free. It was an amazing show.)
More Contemporary:
Kanye West - (Guy's a douche, but his creative process is amazing. He's been through a lot and the fact that he isn't entirely crazy is pretty shocking. He's still kind of crazy though.)
Big Sean - (AMAZING STORY! Google him if you haven't heard it.)
Chiddy Bang - (Amazing Duo. I knew about them way back when, right after The Opposite of Adults was released on Parlophone. I downloaded The Swelly Express literally hours after it dropped. Still play a few songs here and there.
Ground Up - (Little known duo. Check out "Gnarcade" that's what got me into them. They sampled video game tracks and put a dope song together with them.)
That's 12 or 13 I think. Haven't counted, but as you can see, my influences are less what inspire me and more what bring me back to good times.
